This weekend the Northern Knights are showing their commitment to the TAC L120 Learner Driver campaign by holding their annual Car Rally.
The players will embark on the 100km course, which will start at Preston Market to gain two hours of valuable driving time in varied urban and rural conditions. The course has been mapped out by club officials to ensure that the players encounter different factors, such as sealed and unsealed roads.
With recent changes to the Learner Driver laws the Northern Knights players continue to be well educated on their responsibilities as an inexperienced driver. Last year legislation was brought in that requires Learner Drivers to log 120 hours of driving practice over a range of conditions in order for them to obtain their probationary licence.
The L120 initiative is brought into sharp focus by the fact that statistically each year, 120 young people (aged 18-25 years) are killed and 2,300 are seriously injured. This is one third of the Victorian Road Toll. Although the level of involvement of young persons aged 18-25 in road trauma has declined in the last decade, the level of risk for this group is still 2-3 times higher than for other age groups.
“Inexperience is a major cause of crashes on our roads. As a Club we care about the safety and well being of our Squad members and are committed to conveying the L120 – Experience, Not Excuses message to our players, their parents and the wider northern region community” Knights Region Manager Peter Kennedy said.
On top of the Car Rally the Knights players will be using this occasion to ‘Make A Pledge’ on film to be a safe and responsible driver. This is another key component of TAC’s L120 campaign where young drivers around the country are being urged to submit their pledges online. The Knights will also be involving the local community by organising a similar ‘Pledge’ event for Reservoir District
Secondary College
in June. All of these pledges will be made available on www.ipledge.com.au.
