On Sunday 21st June the Northern Knights hosted the Western Jets at Preston City Oval. After a chilly start to the morning conditions could not have been better for Football by the opening bounce at 11:00am.
Early momentum however went the way of the Jets as they were able to capitalise on some Knights errors and exploded out to a 28 point lead before the Knights could score. The Knights were finally able to get on the scoreboard when Corey McKay snapped a goal from pocket close to quarter time. Northern played much better Football in the second quarter and with Darcy Macpherson moving into the midfield were able to generate more run and carry through that area. The Knights faster play resulted in a five to two quarter with Mitch Hill looking dangerous after being moved forward kicking two goals to half time. The match tightened up after the long break while Knights were still able to outscore the Jets by eleven points during the third quarter. Mitch Hill continued to be a threat in the forward line for Northern adding another two goals while Bailey Jordan started asserting himself on the game taking some string contested marks. The Knights jumped further in front at the start of the final term with three quick goals as Macpherson & Kieran Malone continued to control the midfield. Both teams squandered a number of opportunities in front of goal late in the match before the Knights eventually went on to record a solid 20 point victory.
Darcy Macpherson continued his strong return from Pre-Season shoulder surgery to claim best afield honours for the Knights while Kieran Malone was again a ball magnets gather 36 possessions (including 8 clearances) through the midfield. Luke Bunker & Lachlan Murphy returned from AGSV commitments and also had a major impact while Michael Ercolano kept up his recent good form.
This weekend is a TAC Cup Development weekend as the NAB AFL U/18 National Championships reach their final rounds. The Knights wish our four representatives Brayden Fiorini, Jade Gresham , Tyrone Leonardis & Matt Perry all the best for their final two matches.
