Gippsland Power - Media Release
If you watched Gippsland Power against the third place Western Jets last week you would have been impressed with the attack on the ball, the pressure applied and the excellent team work that was on display in what was probably at that stage the team's best win for the 2007 season. Well look again, as Gippsland Power took on the highly rated Geelong Falcons at Belmont South Football Ground in cold, blustery wintry conditions.
The game started with Gippsland Power kicking against a three to four goal wind and the Falcons got off to a very quick start kicking the first 2 goals before Sam Kater opened Powers account. Andrew Oldmeadow and Jarryd Blair were outstanding in the midfield for Power, however with enormous pressure being applied all over the ground Gippsland were able to hold the Falcons to three goals for the quarter.
The second quarter opened with the ball see-sawing up and down the ground however Power with the aid of the wind started to take control of the game with great link up team football. The defence lead by Shane McIntosh, Luke Webber and Dean Woodhead started many attacks while the delivery into Gippslands tall forwards was excellent with John Butcher, Tom Crosby and Brent Connelly all causing a headache for the Geelong backmen. Power went in at half time with a 20 points lead and had the momentum.
Power started the third term on the back foot as the Falcons started to get the ball out of the middle and put pressure on the Gippsland defence. Geelong scored the first two goals and all of a sudden Gippsland were under pressure however Darren Granger scored a great angle goal against the wind to steady the team. Gippslands Defence of Michael Stockdale, Shane McIntosh, Dean Woodhead, Darren White, Luke Webber repelled many Geelong attacks and Ruckman Tom Crosby took many telling marks in the last line of defence. Power went into the three quarter time break with an eight point lead.
Geelong started the last term with two quick goals that put them in front and seemed to have all the running, however the Power boys as they have all year rallied and followed the coaches instructions of playing some magnificent team orientated pressure football that saw them slam on nine last quarter goals to run out winners by 48 points.
Final scores, Gippsland Power 18 goals 8 behinds 116 points defeated Geelong Falcons 9 goals 14 behinds 68 points. Goal kickers, Darren Granger 3, Nathan Rogers 3, Jack Brown 2, William Kelly 2, Beau Vernon 2, Jarryd Blair 1, Sam Cole 1, Sam Kater 1, Jared Risol 1, Darren White 1 and Jack Carson 1.
Gippsland Power had many good players on the day Shane McIntosh was in great touch at full back, Andrew Oldmeadow, Darren Granger and Jarryd Blair dominated the midfield and set up many Power goals, William Kelly and Jack Brown won on their wings all day however overall it was a great team effort that Coach Adrian Hickmott and his Coaching staff would be very happy with.
