Gippsland Power - Press Release
By Bryan Mitchell
Today's 2006 AFL Pre-Season/Rookie drafts saw Gippsland Power players figure prominently with Ben Ross being selected by the Kangaroos in the Pre-season draft and Ben Hughes (Kangaroos), Brent Macaffer (Collingwood) and Rob Eddy (St Kilda) gaining a chance of a coveted AFL career through the Rookie Draft process. The Power officials are delighted to have six players picked up in 2006 and relieved that four such quality players had their talents recognised despite missing out on the draft in November.
The Kangaroos "surprise" selection of Ben might have confused the experts in the media but all at the Power club knew that he should have been selected earlier. His unique blend of pace, skill and ability to read the play makes him a ready made AFL player. He was a match winner in the TAC Cup and can electrify matches when he takes his opponents on. He will be joined at the Kangaroos by Ben Hughes (Warragul) whose determination and self-discipline saw him go from being a spare parts player in 2005 to one of the lynch-pin players for the side in 2006. His commitment, strength and work ethic will ensure that he takes full advantage of his opportunities at the Kangaroos.
Brent Macaffer is another boy who has been properly rewarded for his willingness to work incredibly hard to develop his fitness and skills over the past two seasons. Brent kicked over 60 goals this year but should not be pigeon-holed as a full-forward type of player. He has the potential and versatility to develop into a strong mid-fielder as well as the pace to do well as a flanker.
The selection of Rob Eddy (Stony Creek) by the Saints saw another hard working boy recognised and justly rewarded. He was All-Australian / AIS as an under-16 player in 2004 and then played in the under nationals in 2005 and 2006 where he again won All-Australian honours. Rob has shown on the field and at draft camps that he has the stamina of an elite on-baller and that his excellent attitude to all aspects of his football make him well worthy of a chance at the highest level.
