YOUNG PEOPLE PLEDGE TO HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON OUR ROADS
Gippsland Power players Dale Hoghton, Mitchell Golby, Daniel Kilpatrick and Kainen Schrape, today made a pledge to stay safe on the roads and encouraged their peers in local schools to do the same, as part of an effort to help combat the youth road toll.
“Road trauma is the biggest killer of young people. It shouldn’t have to be, because crashes can be avoided,” said Peter Francis, from Gippsland Power.
“By making a pledge, I’ve made a promise to be safe and keep my mates safe on the roads – which means sticking to the road laws and speaking up if I think there’s a risky situation.
“If we all do the right thing on the roads and look out for each other when in the car, we can help make a difference,” said Kainen Schrape.
The road safety pledge idea is an initiative of the TAC in response to the 2007 United Nations World Youth Assembly for Road Safety which addressed youth road safety at an international level. People’s pledges are uploaded on www.ipledge.com.au.
TAC Senior Manager for Road Safety, David Healy commended Gippsland Power players for their efforts in spreading the road safety message to young people in their community.
“We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe,” said Mr Healy.
“Having young people talk to other young people about road safety is a powerful way of getting the message across.
“Peer pressure can be incredibly dangerous, but young people can also influence each other in a positive way just as powerfully if they decide that taking risks in the car is socially unacceptable”.
