PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID DRINK DRIVING
RoadSafe LaTrobe gave Gippsland Power Players a plan to avoid drink driving.
The Looking After Our Mates session looked at presenting a simple, effective message about responsible alcohol-related behavior, the session also urged people to "look after our mates", by making sure they don't drive if they are over blood alcohol limits.
There are simple ways drivers can avoid drink driving such as designating a non-drinking driver, arranging to be picked up or catching a taxi", said RoadSafe Chairperson Andy Milbourne.
If you have to drive, the only sure way of staying under the limit is to avoid drinking altogether. Victoria Police will always be conducting random breath tests on those traveling."
Drivers in their twenties with alcohol in their system are three times more likely to die on our roads than drivers aged 30 years or more. Those caught driving with a BAC over the legal limit face heavy fines and loss of licence and possibly imprisonment.
It is also important to make sure you are not over the limit the next day. As a rough guide, allow yourself at least one hour for every drink consumed before driving.
According to Andy Milbourne, the problem is not confined to drivers and riders, "Thirty per cent of all pedestrians killed are over .05. Wherever alcohol is served, whether it is at the pub or a party, we all need to look after our mates and make sure they get home safely."
The Looking after our mates session has been devised by RoadSafe Victoria, and is supported by Victorian Police, TAC, Australian Drug Foundation, Goodsports program.
Good Sports don't let their mates drink and drive.
