Roos 28-10-178 def Bulldogs 9-12-66
In the first game of the double header, the ever improving Roos took on the slightly under-strength Bulldogs who were missing 3-4 regular first graders from their lineup. The first 10 minutes was well contested by both sides with no scores being posted by either side. After the Roos had settled into the game they started to deliver the ball into the forward 50 with great accuracy. This combined with a few fortuitous bounces saw them post 7 goals to open the quarter and lead the Bulldogs who only managed a single goal in reply by 38 points. Accurate kicking and deft ball movement saw the Roos pile on another 7 goals and leave the Bulldogs quite shell shocked at half time. Poor options and a lack of clearances by the Dogs gave the ball back to the Roos in scoring positions and they took full advantage of it to lead comfortably by 72 at the main break. A bit of pride and a harder go at the footy saw the Dogs start the 3rd quarter in a much better fashion, kicking two quick goals. In a physical quarter the Dogs arm-wrestled with the Roos for every ball and won the quarter 5 goals to 4. In the final quarter though the Roos steadied themselves and stamped their Premiership credentials with a 10 goal effort. Great running and pin-point accuracy were all highlights here. Try as they might, the Dogs could not cut off the supply of quality ball into the Roos forward and Ash Cruickshank & Brett Douglas booted 8 and 7 goals each. In reply the Dogs managed 2 goals of their own, but probably blew about another 5 with rushed kicks. For the Dogs Aaron Froud & Troy Campbell kicked 3 goals each and Dean Foley was the Best Player. For the Roos they were well served by their forwards and Damien Buchanan & Daniel Flint both had great games.
Saints 25-27-177 def Swans 3-5-23
In a tough day at the office, the second game of the double header saw the League leaders pound the home side by a considerable margin. With a skinny playing roster and a couple of their best players out/unavailable, they were up against it. The Saints were also without a few of their regular first graders but as ever fielded a strong side. With some controversy over playing numbers taking a little while to sort out, the Saints pushed hard in the opening quarter to blow the Swans off the park, kicking 11 goals to nil and leading at the first break by 76 points. The scoring slowed a little in the 2nd quarter, with the Saints putting 5 more on the board and the Swans getting away with 2-2 of their own. However the visitors were never headed and held a huge lead of 98 points at the main break. The young Swans team was doing its best to hold the strong Saints attack, but was finding the going quite tough. The 3rd quarter saw the Saints push further ahead with 6 more goals. The Swans could only muster a single behind in reply. The last quarter saw both sides tire and look for the final bell to end the game. The Saints kicked 3 goals and a stack of behinds, while the Swans added another goal to their overall score. The Saints ran out convincing winners by 154 points. For the Saints Dave Kent and Stuart Walker kicked 5 & 4 goals respectively and there were a stack of other goal kickers. Tony Halloran was the best player for the Saints. On a tough day for a fullback John Robinson was the Swans best and their goals scorers were Josef Atkinson, Mitch Firth and Aaron McRae.
Nomads 10-10-70 def Eagles 4-8-32
In the lowest scoring match of the round the Narrabri Eagles were far from disgraced against the visisting Nomads, going down by 38 points at Leitch Oval in Narrabri.
The game started fairly evenly, with the Nomads kicking 3 goals to the Eagles 2. The 2nd quarter saw the Nomads strech the lead a little adding 2 more goals to the Eagles one to hold a slender 14 point advantage at the main break. The 3rd quarter proved to be the game breaker, with the Noamds adding another 3 majors to their total and the Eagles only posting 3 behinds. This gave the visitors a buffer of 26 points coming into the last. The final quarter was quite a miserly one points wise with the Nomads kicking 2-3-15 to keep the Eagles at bay who only added 1-3-9 to their score. For the Nomads Glenn Northway kicked 3 goals and was supported by Dylan McGrath and Richard Malone who kicked a pair each. Malone was also the best Nomad player on ground. For the home side goals were posted by Mark Stevens, James Geaghan, Daniel Hughes and Dave Lewis who was also the Eagles best.
