In spite of the fact that the TAFL kicked to an early lead, through the kicking of Inverell's Mick Viney, the North Coast's superior skill and ability to handle the wet conditions was the difference between the sides on the day. TAFL suffered a blow just after half time when they lost Inverell Saints star forward Mick Viney with an arm injury. AFL North Coast held TAFL scoreless in the final quarter to run out winners 16.16.112 to 8.1.49. AFL officials although disappointed with crowd numbers, which were down due to the wet and cold conditions, were impressed with Varley Oval's top class facilities and with the standard of footy played in the wet conditions. AFL Northern Manager, Chris McKinley, has indicated that this event is likely to return to Inverell in two years. The AFL was full of praise for the way the event was organised by the Inverell Saints and was full of praise for the hospitality shown by Inverell people to the visiting teams.
