The Inverell Saints face their biggest test of the year so far against the table topping Tamworth Kangaroos. The match will all but assure the winner a minor premiership and the hosting rights to the major semi. The 2008 ledger stands at 1 all, with the Roos winning the last encounter in June by less than a kick. The Saints team will be stronger than when they last met, but a couple of key absentees could hurt the Saints chances.
The team has been bolstered by the returns of Alex Dasey from injury and Dave Kent and Tom Williams from other commitments. Both Dasey and Williams have had outstanding years, punctuated by selection in the TAFL Representative side, and their run and drive through the midfield is a massive inclusion. Kent is a prodigious talent whether it be in the forward line or through the midfield and his inclusion instantly makes the Saints a better team.
Much of the Saints hopes are emphasised in the defensive line. Sam Kimmince has had an extraordinary year, growing from strength to strength, and will get a key defensive role of some kind. Matt Harrison is the unsung hero of the team and will also be an important defensive stopper whilst Shaun Mansbridge proved last week he was a full back for life and his precise delivery out of defense will be vital.
The forward line will once again be led by Mick Viney, who consistently kicks bags of goals each year. With the like of Hadland, Walker and Kent around him, the Roos defense will need to be at their best to contain the talent.
The equation for this one is quite simple. Win and you host a major semi. The Saints are desperate to do that again this year as are the Roos, so in short, this game will be an absolute beauty.
Don't forget, all ladies, there is a women's match for charity on before the main game, kicking off at 12.30pm. All interested parties make sure they are there to lace on the boots.
