The Inverell Saints have broken the drought and defeated a depleted New England Nomads outfit by 63 point at Varley Oval on Saturday.
The Nomads, missing a number of key players, did not resemble the team that has dominated the competition for the past five seasons as they looked unlikely to kick a winning score against their arch rival.
The Saints dominated from the outset with Lachie White booting two goals for the opening quarter and Kyle Payne performing well on the wing. If not for inaccurate kicking, the game may well have been over by quarter time. Bailey Gardner left the field during the first term after receiving a corked thigh and did not return for the rest of the game
The Nomads attempted to come back during the second term but also had problems in front of goal, booting six behinds for the term as the home side went to the main break up by 29 points.
Troy Hill, playing his best game for the Saints, thwarted many Nomads attacks and provided drive off the half back line. His work rate out of the backline, along with the defenive efforts of Sam Kimmince and Beau Coles assisted the Saints in building a reasonable lead during the third stanza. A five goals to two third term sealed the result for the home side with Ben Gregory kicking two goals for the term.
The Saints continued to dominate in the last quarter, booting four goals to two to run out comfortable 63 point victors
