The Inverell Saints will face off against the Tamworth Kangaroos in an ANZAC Day blockbuster this Friday night. It is the feature match of the Tamworth AFL Round and the biggest test of the year so far for the unbeaten Saints. The last time the two teams met was last year's Grand Final, a match described by many as the best Grand Final in Tamworth AFL history.
The Saints will be entering the match undermanned and still missing several key players. With 5 first choice players out, it is up to the younger brigade to stand up and be counted for the Saints. The Kimmince boys once again carry a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Sam has stepped up in the ruck and is playing well above his weight getting first service to the midfield runners. Joe has made the move from full back to half forward, proving his class at both ends of the ground. The running game of the Saints could prove to be influential in this match. Alex Walker, Jono Elphick, Darren Pithers and Tom Williams will run through the middle and always provide great service to the forwards. Mick Viney will once again lead the attack, but the emergence of Justin Pay and the crumbing of Fraser Hughes is sure to test the defense of the Roos. Co-Coach Shaun Mansbridge will take a major defensive role, as will the experienced Bruce Wall with prodigal son Dave Kent sure to provide plenty of run from the backline.
The last time the Roos made the trip north to Varley, they very nearly caused a major upset, and in front of what could be another massive crowd, they could easily atone for last year's Final. With 2 good wins under their belt, including a flogging of Gunnedah last week, they will enter the game as favourites. The Saints will need to be at their very best to keep their spot at the top of the ladder.
All players need to be at the ground by 5.30pm at the latest for the 6.30pm bounce.
