The Inverell Saints have defeated the New England Nomads by 75 points at Varley Oval. The Saints led from start to finish and, apart from a brief period in the third quarter, dominated the under-manned Nomads. The win was the 19th consecutive win for the Saints and their 14th straight at Varley Oval. In fact, the last time the Saints were beaten at home was in Round 9, 2006 by the Swans.
The win was set up in the first quarter, with Mick Viney dominating up front, Jono Elphick running through the middle and Coach Shaun Mansbridge playing a great defensive role. Youngsters Sam Kimmince and Tom Williams were influential throughout the game, with Kimmince giving great service from the ruck and Williams providing run and excellent service to the forwards. One of the highlights of the game was the debut of Mick "Irish" Corley who showed he has tremendous potential and plenty of courage.
The forward line was led by the opportunist Fraser Hughes, who kicked 5 goals, all of which came from good crumbing skills. Mick Viney booted 3 in his 50th game - the first Saint to have passed this milestone. It is a great indicator of Mick's commitment to the club that the Saints have only played 51 games in our short history.
This week the Saints face a massive challenge taking on the also unbeaten Tamworth Kangaroos in a rematch of last year's Grand Final. The match will take place on Friday night under lights at Varley starting from 6.30pm.
Players are reminded training is on Monday and Wednesday night this week.
