Led by Graham Nuttall medalist Tony Halloran, the Saints fought off a gallant Kangaroos outfit in front of a huge crowd to take out the town's very first Aussie Rules Premiership.
The Saints jumped to an early lead to go into quarter time up by 4 goals thanks mainly to the elusive Alex Walker, who kicked 2 goals for the afternoon and looked dangerous when near the ball.
When the home team looked as if they would take a strangle hold on the game, the Kangaroos would fight back and kept at striking distance to go into the main break 23 points down.
The Kangaroos made their charge in the third term to reduce the margin to less than two goals before the Saints steadied to go into the last beak up by 2 goals.
The final quarter was a struggle as the Kangaroos took the upper hand to hit the front at the 10 minute mark. The visitors squandered scoring opportunities before the tiring Saints, aided by the home crowd support, mustered up another assault on goal with Captain Jason Gobbert sealing the premiership late in the game.
What makes Gobbert's efforts even more remarkable was the fact he had been playing the finals campaign with a severely torn groin muscle and had not seriously trained during the finals campaign.
Halloran showed his durability after receiving another caning while putting his body on the line.
For the boys who represented the Inverell Saints in 07, you have done yourselves, the Club and the town proud.
The Inverell Saints F.C would like to acknowledge Inverell Shire Council, Inverell Sports Council, 2NZ/GEM FM, The Inverell Times and the many sponsors and volunteers who've made this year a truly memorable one.
As President I would also like to congratulate my Committee who've worked very hard since our inception in 2004. I tip my hat to all of you.
Thank you and good bye for 2007.
