INVERELL Saints made sure the Tamworth Swans didn’t celebrate a 10-year premiership reunion and 250th game for club stalwart Dean Finlay with a 12.6 88 to 6.9 45 TAFL premiership win at No 1 Oval, Tamworth on Saturday.
The Saints kept the Swans scoreless in the first term whilst kicking three goals, were almost as miserly in the second quarter, kicking four goals to one, and then continued the dominance in the third quarter with a 3-1 goal result.
The Swans did have something to celebrate when they won the fourth quarter in what was a 43-point success for the visitors.
“All in all, a cold and crappy day –beautiful football weather,” Saints coach Dick Gleeson said.
“Our boys were pretty good today.
“The Swans tried hard too.
“They were celebrating a 10 year reunion and Dean’s 250th game.
“We knew they’d want to play well but our boys were good.
“All in all on a big day for them (Swans), it was a good day for us.
“We did have a few out too.”
He said ruckman Chris Pay led from the front.
“He gave our boys first use of the ball all day,” he said.
“He did a real good job and Tommy Williams, Troy Dan and Andrew Schneider all played well too.”
The Saints meet the Tamworth Kangaroos at Varley Oval on Saturday in a battle to determine second spot on the ladder.
