The Inverell Saints remain undefeated after five rounds of the Tamworth AFL competition after sealing a 20.21.141 to 10..6.66 win over the Gunnedah Bulldogs at Varley Oval on Saturday
Fresh from a 203 point win last weekagainst the Narrabri Eagles, you'd assume the Saints would be ready for the clash against the Dogs but that was not to be.
The opening quarter was owned by the visitors who simply wanted the ball more and dominated general playto set up a surprising 25 point win at the first break
After resetting at quarter time, the Saints began to win the contested ball through Luke Selig and Damon Harrison as the home side booted five goals to two to regain a slender 5 point lead by the main break.
The game could well have been decided well before half time if not for the amount of missed shots at goal which continue to hinder the Inverell side.
The second half was dominated by the Saints as they continued to pepper the goal and control general play with Selig having a field day around the ground while the Cosgrove twins were elusive in the forward line. The Saints booted 14 goals to 3 in the second half to win comfortably in the end.
Sam Kimmince again starred for the Saints as he foiled numerous Doggie forays into the forward line while Mike Gould & Chris Whitton came to the fore with four goals each.
The game was stopped early with two minutes remaining when John Putt was injured in a contest resulting in an ambulance being called.,
Putt was taken to hospital but later discharged with no serious injury and should be fit to play next week.
The win by the Saints sets up the clash against reigning premier New England Nomads in Armidale next weekend. Both teams are yet to taste defeat this season
