The Nomads, who are trying to better their position in the final 5, came out with all guns blazing to go into the first break up by 11 points. Jay Dunlop proving to be elusive in the forward line kicking 4 goals for the afternoon.
The momentum stayed with the Nomads in the second term with the margin blowing out to almost 4 goals before the Saints hit back with 3 late goals for the quarter to go into the main break down by 9 points.
In that term, Saints star Jono Elphick was reported for allegedly stomping/kicking an opponent, which could be costly for the competition leaders going into the finals series.
Coach Dick Gleeson called on his players for an improved second half effort and the Saints delivered, running over the top of the Nomads, kicking 4 unanswered goals to lead at the last change by 15 points. The run from the Saints started to worry the tiring Nomads outfit with the likes of young stars in Joe Kimmince, Alex Dasey and Tom Williams coming to the party while Matt Harrison showed his tenacity and fight for the hard ball gets in defence. Stuart Walker again provided a target up forward, contesting marks and driving the ball forward.
Nathan Munro and "Pastor' Johnno Kennedy came into the game in the last term with the Pastor showing us his dancing skills as he balked and ran the ball forward while Nato Munro kicked two last quarter goals to bring his tally to three for the afternoon as the Saints booted five goals to two, to win 14 9 93 to the New England Nomads 9 5 59.
Coach Dick Gleeson was obviously happy with the solid win considering his side was tested, having its backs to the wall early and still prevailing in the end. His only concern now is Jono Elphick who will front the TAFL tribunal on Monday on the stomping/kicking charge. It's Elphick first report charge in his two year playing career with the Saints
The Inverell Saints, who will regain Alex Walker and Dave Kent who missed on Saturday, will now have a two week lay off before hosting the 2nd Semi Final against the Muswellbrook Cats at Varley Oval on September 8.
We hope past players, committee and all supporters come out in force to support the boys in their major semi final.
Good Luck for the finals campaign..... GO SAINTERS
