The Inverell Saints have opened their 2016 campaign with a confortable 56 point win over a gallant Tamworth Swans at Varley Oval last Saturday.
Led by Lachie McDonald with six goals, the Saints were never troubled in a game played in very warm conditions.
The Saints opened strongly with McDonald and Luke Selig kicking majors for the term while Damon Harrison dominated the centre and was responsible for many attacking thrusts into the Saints forward 50.
A five goal to one second term set up the win for the home side with McDonald booting three majors and giving the Saints a handy 50 point lead at the major break.
An incident on the outer wing during the third term seem to change the momentum of the game. McDonald was reported by two separate umpires for striking a Swans player. He was red carded and sent from the field.
Unfortunately for the Saints the news got worse during the afternoon with leg injuries to Chris Whitton & Nathan Blacklock and a hand injury to McDonald resulting in less interchanges.
With a mounting injury toll and lack of fitness, the Saints began to tire somewhat during the second half allowing the Swans to finish the game full of running.
The next challenge for the Saints is a trip to Tamworth on Saturday and a meeting with the Kangaroos at No1 Oval.
