It has been quite overwhelming to see the team go from one success to another in the first part of the year but the next phase of the competition I believe is going to be the real test for all players.
I hear training night on Thursday night wasn't up to standard, with Coach Dick Gleeson not impressed with the intent and desire shown by the squad, saying it's the worst training run they've displayed this year. I hope this was just a lapse in concentration. We're in a prime position at the moment and it would be a great waste of all the good work done so far if we started to take things for granted and expect things to fall into place for us. We need to double up our workload and remain focused on each opponent, each week if we are to maintain this winning streak.
Today's opponent is the Tamworth Swans. Reigning premier, proud club and will be out to inflict the Saints first loss this year. They're in a rebuilding phase at the moment but when we played them in Round 1, there were promising signs shown by their younger players who've been elevated to the seniors after a number of retirements last year.
Lachlan Rowling's, who enjoys the clashes between the clubs, will be the danger man for the Saints. He leads from the front and is always hard to control so we'll be keeping a close eye on him.
The Saints will again rely on getting the ball first from the ruck contests and driving it forward quickly.
Captain Jason Gobbert, Gary Hadland, Fraser Hughes and Pete Dunlop will be given the task of getting the ball into attack for the likes of Mick Viney, Alex Walker and Stewart Walker to work their magic.
It's an important game for young guns Alex Dasey and Tom Williams who's speed and physical attack on the ball around the ground could lead to quick transfers of the ball into the Saints forward line.
Joe Kimmince will be sorely missed at full back after receiving a corked thigh during last weekends inter league clash with Summerland.
The Saints will go into the game as favorites and should win but if complacency sets in this could be a struggle.
Those selected today will be keen to retain their spots for the upcoming weeks with a number of boys on the sidelines keen to make an impact on the squad. It's a good problem to have but for those not getting regular outings, it's important for them to remain focused, stay fit and be ready for their opportunity to pull on a Saints jumper. For those already in the team, it's up to you, to keep your eye on the ball, knowing that others keen for their spot.
I'm sure the Saints will regain their focus after a fortnight break and record their 7th win of the season.
PREDICTION: Saints 33 points
Congratulations to our representatives Alex Walker, Alex Dasey, Joe Kimmince, Fraser Hughes, Pete Dunlop and Nathan Munro following last weeks Inter-League carnival.
