Saints 18-20-128 def Cats 14-11-95
The Inverell Saints pushed themselves into outright first place with their 5th consecutive win over the high flying Cats in extremely windy conditions in Inverell. Having played both contenders (Nomads and Cats) back to back the Saints must be happy with their start to the season.
The wind was a factor in the game right from the start, with the Saints kicking 8 behinds before posting their first goal. It even troubled the experienced Ryan McEvoy as he had five misses before posting his first goal for the Cats. The game was played at fairly physical pace, with both teams going hard at the ball throughout the game.
It was pretty even up to half time where the Saints burst out in the third quarter kicking 8 goals to 3 to give them a good lead coming into the final part of the game. The cats finished strongly with 6 goals in the final term, but the Saints kicked 5 also and had done enough during the 3rd quarter to take the points.
Roos 23-23-161 def Eagles 6-3-39
A week is a long time in football and after having good numbers last weekend and overcoming the Bulldogs who played short, the Eagles have found themselves in the same position on their first road trip of the year, travelling to take on a Roos side that was thumped by Muswellbrook the week before.
The Roos were never troubled in their 120 point victory, leading at each stage by a comfortable margin. To their credit the Eagles made the trip, didn't forfeit and stay alive for another week in the TAFL comp.
For the Roos Lachlan Morrison and Andrew Hawkins both had good days with the boot, kicking 8 and 6 goals respectively. For the Eagles Dean" The General" Patten kicked a pair of goals and Shane Murphy and Daniel Budge played well in a beaten side.
Dogs 16-16-112 def Swans 9-16-70
This game was very close for the first 50 minutes with both sides trading goals and finishing on equal points at the half time break. In the first quarter the Swnas were running freely on fresh legs and it looked liked the Bulldog curse of slow starts and big first quarter leads was going to replay itself once again. The Swans had a lot of scoring opportunities and some rushed kicks and unlucky deflections saw them post more behinds than goals. However, they went ot the first break leading the Dogs by10 points.
The Dogs played a controlling game in the last quarter, blocking any attacking moves by the Swans and continuing to slot through several goals, kicking 4-4-28 to the Swans 2-1-13 to seal the win. Mark Ewington led the way with 4 goals and was ably supported by Adam Rees, Arlo Pryor and Farran Lamb who all kicked two goals apiece. For the Swnas their captain Daniel Quinn was a standout and many of their younger players played well also.
Gunnedah Coach Graham Grenfell was pleased with the team effort and stated that our preparation this week was much better and he was happy with how each member of the team carried out their on-filed assignment today. "Each player put in for his team mates today and it showed in the rooms before the game an on the field".
Swans coach Lachlan ROWLINGS said after the game, "Today was a similar story to the past weeks when we have lead the fight up to half time. Due to injuries we were limited in rotations and the boys were tiring in the second half. Once again there were glimpes of quality footy and a sign of things to come."
