Led by Coach Dick Gleeson and Jason Gobbert (who both kicked 5 goals), and with Mick Viney up forward, the Saints out-muscled the Kangaroos to set up the confidence-building win.
The Saints got the early jump with the new look two-pronged forward line and booted 6 goals to 2 to set up an early 26 point lead.
¼ Time Saints 6-3-39 Roos 2-1-13
The Saints kept the pressure on in the 2nd term with their running game proving hard for the Roos to stop. Jono Elphick continued his good debut season in the ruck, giving Shaun Mansbridge, Fraser Hughes and "Go Gary Go" Hadland first use of the ball out of the centre. Bruce Walls' run from the back line was outstanding. Great team lifting stuff.
Once again the Saints outscored the Roos 6 goals to 2 to go into the main break with a handy 49 point lead.
1/2 Time Saints 12-5-77 Roos 4-4-28
The warm weather conditions seem to take its toll on the players with the speed of the game slowing down. The Roos started the quarter with some purpose but the Saints composed themselves to go into the last term with a 50 point lead. Dave Kent injured a hamstring while Joe Kimmince sustained a foot injury. Both players took no further part in the game.
¾ Time Saints 14-8-92 Roos 6-6-42
The Saints opened the last term in fine style with Dicky Gleeson strolling into an open goal to well and truly signal the end for the Roos.
The boys remained disciplined throughout the game and ended up outscoring the Roos 4 goals to 3 to win by 55 points and booked a spot in the Preliminary final in a fortnight either against the New England Nomads or the Tamworth Swans.
