The first quarter saw the Saints open well with Dave Kent kicking the first goal of the game. The Nomads hit back with the next two goals before Mick Viney scored his first goal of the day with his now trade-mark backward heel kick. With Jason Gobbert back in the team and giving the Saints on ballers first use of the ball we went into quarter time with a ten point lead. Mick Viney and Dave Kent got two goals each.
1st Quarter Scores: Saints 4-2-26 Nomads 2-4-16
The rain came down harder in the second quarter and was making the game a hard slog for both teams. Scoring was hard and both teams scored only two goals each. Joel Fleming and Nick Baird both scored one goal each. The Saints went into the half time break with a twelve point lead.
Half Time Scores: Saints 6-7-43 Nomads 4-7-31
The third quarter saw the Saints strike first with another goal to Mick Viney. The Nomads then fought their way back into the game with three quick goals to level the scores. The Saints dug deep, with Darren Pithers coming onto the ground and getting a goal, followed by a goal to Shaun Rynne (whose kicking coach, Scott Wilson, took credit for); but the turning point in this quarter for the Saints was the move of Stew Walker into the forward line by super coach, Dick Gleeson. Stewie was in everything and helped keep the ball in our half of the ground.
3rd Quarter Scores: Saints 9-10-64 Nomads 7-7-49
The last quarter was completely dominated by the Saints, and that man Walker, to keep the Nomads scoreless for the quarter. The Saints showed a resolve that has been lacking at times this year and even when the Nomads were frustrated and doing silly things we kept our heads, kept our mouths shut, and got on with the game. It was great to see what can be achieved when we play as a team. Goal kickers for the quarter were Mick Viney, Mick Munro and Johno Kennedy with one each.
Final Scores: Saints 12-13-85 Nomads 7-7-49
Goal kickers: Mick Viney 4, Dave Kent 2, Joel Fleming 1, Nick Baird 1, Darren Pithers 1, Shaun Rynne 1, Mick Munro 1, John Kennedy 1.
