The Swans had numerous opportunities to get a reasonable lead but they didn't make the Saints pay on the scoreboard. Highlight of the quarter was the Brazilian soccer skills of Mick Viney who overran the ball in the goal square, only to back heel the ball for a goal. He kicked two for the term

The game started to hot up with both teams 4 goals for the term. The Saints suffered significant injuries with Brendan Anderson (Shoulder) and Dave Kent (Calf) and Gary Hadland (Calf) not returning to the field for the rest of the game, which in the end would be telling.
The Saints led at one stage by 11pts but the Swans hit back hard to take back the lead at the long break

The premiership quarter was a struggle with both teams struggling to shake of their opponent.
A controversial incident occurred when a goal was awarded to the Saints only for it to be deemed a behind by Field Umpire Lindsay Brash.
Two points separated the teams at the last break with the Swans holding the advantage.

Another questionable decision occurred when a free kick was given against Saints Coach Dick Gleeson in a marking contest, which again bewildered supporters. But it took only a 5-minute burst by the Swans to take the advantage and the win.
The Saints lost no respect from their opponent, stating at the after match function that The Saints are the most physical outfit going around in the TAFL.
