The Inverell Saints will kick off their defense of the 2010 TAFL Premiership this weekend at home against the Muswellbrook Cats. After an interrupted pre season which saw two forfeits, the Saints are confident of getting a competitive side on the park for Round 1.
The Saints have seen many off season departures that will severely test the depth of the Saints 2011. Gone are 2010 Giles Medallist Corey Wheeler, veteran Shaun Mansbridge and 2010 Premiership player Mitch Hall. Mick Viney will miss most, if not all of the season due to a knee injury and the semi retirements of Jason Gobbert and Dick Gleeson has stripped the Saints of alot of experience.
The Saints have welcomed some new players to fold, including Russel Brien, Matt Lane, Brendan Simpson, Paul Rice, Jeff Conley and youngsters Nick Thompson and Hamish Bird. All have impressed at training, and with the likely addition of Charlie McShane who has experience in Victoria, the Saints have managed to put together another good group of determined players.
Round 1 promises to be a tough encounter, but running onto the hallowed turf at Varley should be a good motivation for the Saints. With only 6 home games this year, the Saints will be keen to get the year off to a winning start. First bounce is at 2pm.
