It was an early start for the Saints on Saturday as they travelled to Muswellbrook to take on the struggling Cats. The match is always tough because of the sheer amount of travel needed just to get there and the fact we have to show up and take the 4 points.
The Saints started the match in fine form, controlling the middle and producing plenty of flow with the ball. The Cats found it very difficult to get the ball out of their forward line and the Saints produced wave after wave of attack. It was only some poor finishing that cost the Saints a bigger quarter time lead but keeping the Cats scoreless ensured a healthy half time buffer.
The second quarter saw the weather turn for the worst, with the game becoming a battle as to which team could play in the tough conditions the better. Again the Saints had problems finishing opportunities on goal, but the back 6 again restricted the Cats, allowing just 2 minor scores whilst the Saints opened up an 8 goal advantage at the long break.
During the third, the Saints opened the game right up kicking 6 unanswered goals to all but put the game to rest. Unfortunately the game turned farcical as the Cats decided the best way to stop the Saints midfield was to literally take their heads off. The margin at the final quarter change was 90 points, but the Saints were down to 16 fit men and just looking to ride out the game. The Cats kicked some late goals to put some respectability to the scoreline but the game was over as a contest long before the final siren.
Corey Wheeler was outstanding through the midfield and along with Tom Williams controlled the running out of the middle. Sam Kimmince was instrumental across the backline, but not to be outdone, big brother Joe was equally impressive up front. Mick Corcoran was very impressive playing a range of positions across the ground, whilst Aaron Eddie and Mick Vellilla showed they are always improving with impressive displays.
The Saints now ready themselves for the Roos at home this weekend for a huge top of the table clash.
