Season 2010 starts in earnest for the Inverell Saints this weekend when they look to open their account against the Narrabri Eagles at Varley Oval. The Saints drew the short straw and had the Round 1 bye, but the summer season is finally over and a win at home will help erase the memories of last years Grand Final loss.
The team will have a very different look to last years decider, with the Saints losing the services of Peter Heath, Beau Ryan, Ben Lee and Jack Lawton who were all integral components of the run into the finals. However the Saints have picked up Corey Wheeler from Victoria, and seen the return of Jason Gobbert and Luke Selig. Captain Chris Whitton will also play his first game since Round 5 last year after suffering a serious knee injury.
The Eagles have already opened their account in 2010 after a convincing win over the Muswellbrook Cats last week and will be keen to continue their unbeaten record this weekend. They are led by experienced captain Dwayne Shawcross who will control the midfield and will be tough for the Saints onballers to contain.
Entry to the ground is free and all the action starts at 2pm.
The Saints will also host their first social event of the year with the first ever Celebrity Cook Off being held at the Royal starting around 6pm. 6 local 'celebrities' will take part in the cook off, looking for the best curry in Inverell. Resident curry expert Gerry Taviera will be the judge.
