Women

The Warriors women have fought hard in
their second overtime game in three days to upset an under strength, top of the
ladder, Lightning side by 2 points 58-56. The Warriors proved to be too good for
the Lightning women down the stretch led once again by Tara Carroll with 18 points,
ably supported by Peta Bailey with 17. Lightning struggled to find any rhythm
with 5 regular team players away on the Surabaya tour. However they battled all
night and had a 3 point shot on the buzzer for the win just fall short. Megan
Sinclair was a stand out for Lightning dominating at both ends of the floor finishing
with a round high 24 points. Alana Dingo also had her best game of the season
finishing with a season high 14 points. Warriors face Ansett next week while Lightning will take on the
ever improving TV Jets.

The Eagles have continued an impressive 4
game winning streak with a 12 point defeat of Ansett 52-40, to move them 2
spots up the ladder into 3rd, signaling their return to premiership
contention. The Eagles led at every break and proved to strong for Ansett thanks
largely to the scoring prowess of Michelle Friel (19 points), Patricia Graham (17
points) and Megan Reeves (10 points). Ansett struggled to convert at the offensive end without points
scoring machine Sam Dresher (Surabaya Tour) and with new American import Nina
Randle (4 points) perhaps struggling to find her feet in her second game for
the team. For Ansett, Olivia Birkett was the only player scoring in double
figures with 16 points. The Eagles victory sets up a tantalizing battle next
week against second placed Uni Rebels in match of the round. Ansett on the
other hand face a crunch game against a difficult Warriors side full of
confidence after beating the 1st place side in lightning and
narrowly loosing in overtime to 2nd place Rebels on Saturday.

Uni Rebels after a slow start proved too
strong for Razzle running out narrow winners 49-41. The win by Uni Rebels was
set up again by star point guard Jaylene Bonson with a game high 22 points ably
supported by Justine Schmidt with 10. For Razzle NZ Olympian Kate
McMeekan-Ruscoe again lead the way with 18 but was the only Razzle player to
score double figures. The win by Rebels move them closer to Lightning now only
trailing on percentage while the loss moves Razzle down to 5th place.
Rebels face Eagles in the game of the week while Razzle has the week off.

Men

Eagles have continued their recent winning
ways recording their 3rd consecutive victory over a gallant Ansett
outfit. The scores were close in the first quarter before Timmy Duggan shone
brightly scoring 18 of his round high 28 (including six 3 pointers) over the next
2 quarters to take control for Eagles. Anthony Dennien contributed well for the
Eagles with 10 while Joseph Johnson chipped in with a handy 9. For Ansett Ross
Vassic shot the ball well finishing with 17 while Arjen Smit (11) and Paul
Johnson (10) had good games for Ansett. Both teams face tough games next week
with Ansett taking on Warriors while Eagles tackle the high flying Uni Rebels.

The second game of the evening saw top of the table Uni
Rebels take on last place Razzle in what surely was to be a David vs Goliath
battle. Uni Rebels welcomed the
addition of new recruit Daniel Briglia from the Knox club (Melbourne) to bolster
what already was a potent line up. Razzle started well matching Uni Rebels for
the first quarter before eventually being overrun. Rebels ran out eventual winners 94-47 however the game was much
more evenly contested than the score line suggests. All Rebels players troubled
the scorers but it was the three pronged attach of Marcus Ch’ng (27), Josh
Cohen (21) and Nick Freer (18) that caused the majority of the damage. For
Razzle Kyle Webb had a team high 16 and was supported by Ryan Barnes who had an
outstanding game at both ends of the floor with 15 points and some tough
defense. Rebels now extend their winning streak to 10 and face a rejuvenated
and strengthened Eagles side next week. Razzle has the week off next week and
is still chasing their first win but from the performance this week it may not
be to far away.

Warriors have fought back from a 1st quarter deficit against Lightning to cement their top for position with a
comfortable 72-59 win. Lightning looked out of sorts as their usually free
flowing offence was stunted by some hard nosed Warrior defense. Bayi handy was
again the standout with a solid all round game consisting of 22 points, several
steals and some memorable assists. John Culbertson had a solid game showing
some good touches around the basket finishing with 14 points including 7 in the
last quarter. Young Justine Costello for Warriors had one of his best games of
the season hitting 2 crucial 3 pointers in a row to end any chance of a late
rally form Lightning. For Lightning
Cameron Baily (15) and Mark Lloyd (14) contributed well. Warriors face Ansett
next week while Lightning will have a tough assignment against 2nd placed TV Jets.
