Preliminary & Grand Final

League Women - Eagles v Uni Rebels

The team coming into the finals on a roll was the Uni Rebels and they kept up that momentum with a hard fought 68-61 win over the second placed Eagles to get themselves into an unlikely Grand Final appearance with the Tracy Village Jets. The Rebels didn’t look like contender’s half way through the season but made up for the slow start by piling on the wins in the second half of the season to get themselves into their first Challenge Season GF since 2003 when they last won it. The Rebels broke this game wide open at the start of the fourth quarter. They led 48-45 at the end of three quarters of play, but left the Eagles floundering with a withering 13 points to nil fourth quarter beginning putting the Birds behind by 15 with just six and a half minutes remaining! To their credit the Birds did rally and got to within 5 at 64-59 after a basket by Alysha-Marie Williams, but Tiayana Sing nailed a trey in reply and pretty much sealed the game for the Rebels. Danielle Ponter (13.8ppg) led the winners with 21, Jaylene Bonson (16.8ppg) added 20 and Sing finished with 11. Ieasha Friel hit 25 for the Eagles with Williams (9.2ppg) hitting a season high 24. For the record Friel (26.4ppg) finished the season as a 13 year old leading the statistics in every field (ppg, total pts, treys,ft’s & 2 pointers) something that has never been done before in League history by one so young (It has actually never been done by anyone).

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Tracy Village Jets and the Uni Rebels put on a good show in the Grand Final with the Jets winning out in the end 73-66. For the Jets it was the 11th straight Grand Final win in a row (including Championship Seasons) since 2012 and their 12th overall since 2011…making them the most successful team (men or women) ever in DBA history. Kylie Duggan (14.8ppg) led a quartet of double point scorers for the Bombers with a team high 20. Tikesa Docherty-Cole (16.8ppg) hit 15, Demi Cubillo 14 and Erin Geer 12. The glaring difference in scoring was from the free throw line. The Jets hit 21 to just 8 for the Rebels with Cubillo collecting 9 of the 21 for the Bombers. The foul count was 25 each, but the Jets made better use of their trips to the charity stripe. Leading the Rebels was Jaylene Bonson (16.8ppg) who hit a team and game high 29 with support from Kahlisha Rioli (13) and Danielle Ponter (10). A great finish to the season for the Jets and the promise of more to come from the Rebels in the upcoming Championship Season which is tipped to begin on the 3rd of August.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 16-1, Eagles 11-6, Uni Rebels 9-9, Razzle Storm 6-10, Ansett 6-9 & Lightning 1-14

Men – Preliminary & Grand Final

League Men – Eagles v Palmerston Power

The Eagles had the measure of the Palmerston Power all season long and proved the fact with another convincing win, this time an 87-60 affair that gaves the Eagles a chance to make amends for their major semi loss to the Uni Rebels in the Grand Final. Anthony Golden had the hot hand for the Eagles as he dropped 33 points on the Power to lead all scorers. The Eagles set up the win with a strong first half, limiting the Power to just 30 points while hitting 52. The second half was less points but similar result with the Birds outscoring the Power 35-32. Helping out Golden was David Oates who also hit double figures with 12. No other Eagle hit double figures, but everyone scored. Palmerston’s Bizima Fisto (19.2ppg) led the Power with 14 and Jesse Bell (16.3ppg) hit 13, but the team struggled to put points on the board…testament to some good defensive work by the Eagles.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels won their 9th Grand Final since 2010 (their 5th Challenge Season win). They beat the Eagles 88-74, handing them their third straight Challenge Season GF loss. Outgunned by the Rebels the Eagles tried to hang tough through Anthony Golden who racked up 8 treys, but it was a futile case as the Rebels rolled onward to the win through the efforts of Spencer Coleman (27 @ 23.2ppg), Tim Morris (19 @ 30.3ppg), Travis Ellis (15) and Jake Eyles (10). Travis Ellis added to his huge collection of Grand Final wins with the Jets (11) getting him a little closer (12) to the DBA record set by former Jet team-mate Michael Maclean who won 19. Golden fell three treys shy of tying the three point record of 86 set by Jarrod Sheppard back in the Challenge Season of 2010. Golden (29.6ppg) finished with game high 29 and David Oates added 11. A great way to wrap up a well contested competition for both teams and it all bodes well for the Championship Season which will see another team added to the competition…Essington.

Ladder:           Eagles 13-4, Uni Rebels 13-3, Ansett 11-4, Palmerston Power 7-9, Lightning 6-8 Tracy Village Jets 6-8, HPP 4- 10 & Razzle Storm 0-14
