Results from Tuesday 17 November (round 20……1 to go)

Women

Lightning have
signaled to the rest of the competition they are ready for the finals with a
comprehensive 78-49 victory over the
Eagles. After half time (41-24) the Lightning went into cruise mode and were
never challenged. Both Claire O’Bryan and Tamara Sheppard shared the top scorer
podium with 22 points while Claire Humphrey managed 17. For the Eagles the loss
now means they must beat Ansett and rely on Razzle upsetting Uni Rebels to
finish second in the regular season. Michelle Friel top scored for Eagles with
18, while Danielle Smith (13) and Megan Reeve (13) also tested the scorers.
Lightning will now prepare for the finals with a last round game against
Warriors while Eagles face off against Ansett in the clear match of the round.

The TV Jets have
finished the season on a high (they have a bye next week) with a three game
winning streak after thumping the Warriors 80-37
thanks to a great team effort at both ends of the court. The win was set-up
in the second and third quarters with a 41-15 run and from there the Jets never
looked back dominating the fourth quarter 25-8. Tikesha Docherty-Cole scored a
game high 24 points but received strong offensive help from Jessica Eason (18
points) who will now return back to Melbourne to play ABA. Tara Carroll (14)
was one of the few standouts for a depleted Warriors outfit who will face a big
task against the minor premiers (Lightning) next week.

Ansett have
continued their strong late season form with a convincing 78-39 victory over Razzle. The win also ensured Ansett of a spot in
the playoffs and has placed them in second position on tie-breaker (a win next
week against Eagles would guarantee second) while simultaneously eliminating
Razzle. A strong outing from Samantha Drescher with a round high 32 points and
a solid 21 from recruit Nina Randle helped secure the win. For Razzle only
Bobby-Jo Carroll (17) and Brianna Grazioli (11) were the only p[layers to score
more than 5 points. Razzle will finish their season with a game against Uni
Rebels while Ansett face a big game against the Eagles with second place in
their own control.

Men

Ansett have denied Razzle of their first victory of the season but
not without a scare. Razzle determined to avoid finishing the season with a
duck egg led at half-time by 4 points and were on the verge of a minor upset.
Ansett fought their way back to lead by one at the final break and proved just
a little bit too good 72-66 against
the gallant Razzle boys. Ross Vasic and Matthew Hunt equal top scored with 20
each closely followed by Tom Hunt with 17. For Razzle Scott Adam scored 15 but
failed to score in the final quarter while Jess Angus contributed 12 (including
10 in the final quarter). Razzle will no doubt give it their all next week in a
battle of David and Goliath against the minor premier Uni Rebels while Ansett
will look to finish on a high with two wins in a row against the Eagles.

The Lightning have claimed the only forfeit victory of this League season after the Eagles failed to
start five players within 10 minutes of the official start of the game.
Unfortunately for the Eagles the forfeit also officially eliminated them from
the competition as they needed to win their last two games to have any chance.

The TV Jets will enter the playoffs on a winning note after defeating
the Bayi Handy’less’ Warriors 81-65.
The Jets jumped out early to control the first quarter (24-12) before the
Warriors fought back to within six at the main break. Despite a strong effort
from leon Purdue with 22 points (including six treys) the TV jets proved too
strong for the Warriors down the stretch. The Jets shared the scoring evenly
with five players reaching double digits; Travis Ellis (17), Dan east (16),
Matt Fagg (16), Clinton Kononen (11) and Liam MacLachlan (10). The Jets now
have a bye to rest up a week before tackling the Uni rebels in the major
semi-final while the Warriors will play against Lightning in a prelude to the ¾
final the following week.
