LIGHTNING BASKETBALL CLUB
History
Lightning Basketball Club is a member of the Darwin Basketball Association (DBA).
We field teams in all senior and junior competitions each season and we also very proud of our Wheelchair team.
We are a large family all sharing the same love for the game of basketball.
Lightning was founded in 1997 by Ian and Carol Charman, Donelle Dingo and Jason Ivinson. An opportunity to increase the number of junior clubs in the DBA presented itself and the Lightning Basketball Club was born.
The success of the first season then extended into the next with the club entering the Senior Competition, nominating teams in every senior grade. Lightning's first Men’s team comprised solely of U18 boys. From this humble beginning Lighting has grown into one of the largest clubs in Darwin (and the NT).
Our primary focus is on junior development, personal growth and a positive team/club attitude. With this philisopy in mind, inaugural Club President Carol Charman defined the Four Golden Rules, which are instilled today;
1. HAVE FUN (the most important)
2. PLAY AS A TEAM
3. LISTEN TO YOUR COACH
4. KICK BUTT.
Awards:
Max Nundle Perpetual Trophy
In recognition of Max’s positive attitude to training, hardwork, consistency, sportsmanship and fair play. This Junior Trophy is awarded annually at the end of year presentations not necessarily to the best player but a junior who has displayed overall positive growth, positive attitude and achievement.
Charman Family Medal: League Women.
Ivo Medal: League Men
Presentations of these medals are determined by a random spectator voting card system. League Player's who displayed the best on court attributes during League games receive a 3, 2, 1 vote.
These are a few of the categories of recognition awarded by the Club.
