Match Report by Ben Carbonaro
While a football coach is always happy with a win, when their team wins by a large margin it adds some extra spice.
Tigers coach Scott West was more than impressed with his team’s 109-point obliteration of Collingwood at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
Ben Warren broke the deadlock and kicked the opening goal for Werribee after six minutes. Five more goals and strong control of the football from the home team helped them to a 34 point lead at quarter time.
The rampage continued during the second quarter as Werribee slammed on another six goals to Collingwood’s two behinds. Collingwood were struggling and Werribee took advantage of their opponent’s mistakes extending their lead to a staggering 68 points at half time.
Collingwood grabbed the early third quarter momentum as Jackson Paine and Jonathon Ceglar kicked two goals in four minutes. The Tigers then kicked eight goals to two to lead by 93 points at the final break.
Warren kicked his fifth goal early in the last term to take the margin over 100 points. Goals to Kangaroos Ben Speight and Malcolm Lynch finished off what was a supremely dominate performance from the Tigers.
West was ecstatic with his team’s huge win, especially the good start and four quarter consistency.
“I think we needed to set the scene early and we were able to do it right from the first bounce. They come at us a couple of times after half-time, but the consistency was there for the four quarters.”
Kangaroos listed small forward Ben Warren kicked six goals to take his season tally to 25 and fellow Roo Cameron Pederson (30 disposals) was best for his game in defence as well as in attack.
West was happy to see a good spread of goal kickers.
“I think it’s been a bit of a theme for us over the year that we’ve had multiple goal kickers and I know there were a lot of goals kicked, but to have multiple goal kickers is a real strength for any team.”
Next for Werribee is a Foxtel Cup quarter final against WAFL club West Perth at the MCG on Saturday.
