The Club song resonated across Lowe Oval after the Pumas' Reserves team took the sword to the Blues last Saturday. For much of the season, there's been little to cheer about, but it was fitting to see the loyal players rewarded with a win. Equally, it was pleasing to see some past players find their way back to Puma land, and with the assistance of a few under 18's who have seen their premiership quest cut short, the team ensured that they climbed up the premiership ladder.
After leading by a goal in the first quarter, the Pumas posted 3 - 3 in the second to hold a comfortable lead at half time. Coolangatta came back stronger to counter the Pumas 3 - 3 in the third and a tight 1 - 2 final quarter by both teams saw Springwood run out 66 - 55 winners.
Adrian 'Bear' Wallin scored 4 goals, coach Simon Rowe kicked 2, while Matt Hendry, Andrew Sponneck, Josh Brown, Anthony Skinner chipped in with 1 each.
A great team effort with the adjudged best players being Anthony Skinner, who with greater commitment could be a valuable player next season, Brett Lewis who is always inspirational leading from the front, young gun Braydon Fitzpatrick, the 'still got it silky smooth' Damian Harrison, and tall man Jamie Mills.
The lads certainly enjoyed the after-match celebrations that culminated in the club's annual Sportsman's Night. A great function enjoyed by all with Collingwood's Peter Daicos relating stories from his past playing days and his current role back at the grass roots level as a junior coach of his son's team. Attendees welcomed Aussie cricketer Rodney Hogg to the microphone with the familiar chant of 'Hogg..y, Hogg ..y ....'. With personal stories from Ashes and West Indies tours dominating the entertaining session, Hoggy revived many memories including the 500/1 win by the Poms and stories from the Richards, Garner, Marshall, Holding & Lillee era. Apart from Hoggy's batting prowess, can anyone remember his bowling figures? An auction of memorabilia saw a bidding frenzy follow with much valuable funds raised for the club. A great night that was well organised by Graham Murrihy and Andrew Hickman with assistance from Committee members was enjoyed by all.
The Pink Ladies function was a tremendous success with funds raised for Breast Cancer Research. Mayor Pam Parker attended the function along with 40 ladies who were treated to a chicken & champagne luncheon capably organised by Donna & Tony Ling and Maree Menz. Well done ladies!
The Albert & Logan News will feature stories of the Pink Ladies Breast Cancer fund raiser and the Pumas Reserves win in their newspaper this week.
