After last week’s game it was great to see that we were more accurate in front of goal. With the addition of Jake McGill and Tom Russell back from injury, the forward line is becoming more potent each week.
Yesterday, with some quick ball movement we showed a couple of times throughout the game that we can be very destructive, especially when we allow the forward line to operate on a one-on-one situation, however, had we had more runners hitting the front of the packs, the score line could have been greater.
Up until half time I thought the mood was very sombre with nowhere near enough talk or endeavour around the ground and had we been playing Coolangatta or Labrador we could have found ourselves in a little trouble.
Luke McMahon and Josh Brown were absolutely awesome and were probably our two best players if judged by consistency. Brayden Fitzpatrick and Matt Preston-Smith also had good games with Fitzy attacking the ball hard in the centre and Matty working hard off the back line. The little men Alex Macdonald, James Williamson and Grayson Huddart along with Brandon Manley on the wing, ran hard most of the game assisting the backline and forward line with some good hard running and attack of the footy.
Alex Macdonald kicked four goals and probably had a hand in another three goals and he was absolutely brilliant in the last quarter running from the centre. Rowan Page, Taylor Ross and Liam Deighton floated in and out of the game but were very effective when they were in. Nick McElroy has been building up to something special and his chase and tackle was inspiring to his fellow team mates and we now only hope his injury is nothing too serious.
With Shane Jones being in sizzling form of late it was going to take another player to step up after he pulled out just before the game sick. That player was to be Nathan McCloy who I thought played his best game for the season so far repelling numerous attacks from the Kenmore Bears. It has been great to see some of the first year players really starting to take the game on with some of their newly- found confidence. I have no doubt that some of them will put pressure on the older boys for a spot in the side come finals time if they keep putting the hard yards in at training and games.
I might have appeared to have been a little negative about our performance yesterday as a whole, but I know in a couple of weeks we have to have consistency in our game and no one can afford to be a passenger. Each week from now we have to step up together and as an individual. Premierships are hard work and a lot of sacrifice. If they weren’t they wouldn’t mean as much and although we are far from one yet, it must be said the opportunity is there if it is wanted.
This week we play our last home match in the home-and-away season against a side we haven’t played before being Ipswich. We have had a good following of supporters at home this year and it has been greatly appreciated. It was also great to see the Under 16’s play so well yesterday in their march to the finals; well done boys.
