After having the week off last week with the bye, the team looked enthusiastic as it prepared for the clash with the Redland Sharks. originally considered one of the better teams in the division, it would be interesting to see how the boys went against what should be a good side.
After losing the toss and having to kick against a strong breeze, the first quarter started well with Michael dominating the tap outs and Lincoln in everything looking to move the ball forward. Jordan was his usual tackling self and placing enormous pressure each time a Redland's player managed to get his hands on the ball. The forward line was seeing plenty of the ball and with JJ having a blinder across half forwaqrd and Jayden controlling play down the wing, the boys managed to get a couple of quick goals and get under way. redland's did manage to get some forward pressure as the quarter rolled on but the defence was holding strong with Oli providing plenty of dash along with Daniel and Sam across half back. A couple of 50m penalties the boys way saw both JJ & Nathan kick goals from the goal square and 8 inside 50s against a strong breeze saw 7 scoring shots for the quarter. Derek was extremely happy with the boys performance and lauded it as one of their best ever. He set the challenge for the team to achieve even more in the second quarter.
The second quarter started much like the first with Michael still dominating in the ruck and Reece getting plenty of the ball out of the middle. Slowly as the quarter progressed Redlands started to apply a little more pressure on the boys and started to break even in the possession count. The back line was working hard repelling the Sharks forward surges and the forward line continue to convert on the scoreboard. Lochie Willaton took a mark of the year contender on the half forward line soaring well above a much taller opponent. Ben Menz was creative across half forward and into everything and with Benny O and Duck coming ino the game the boys had a handy seven goal break at the half. Jordan was controlling the play like a quarter back zoning off and reading the game well.
The thrid quater started a little flat and the boys looked to have dropped off their game. A goal to Redlands breathed some life back into them as Derek tried to get the boys to understand that it wasn't over yet. As more Redland's players started to get first use of the ball and some of our defence accountability dropped off, Redland's tried to make a contest of it. Alex started to come to the fore across half back and with help from Patrick repelled numerous Redland's raids. With the boys intensity dropped a little three quarter time couldn't come quick enough.
The start of the final quarter saw the boys come back out with their minds on the job. Numerous forward forays, saw the boys with a lead that couldn't be pulled in. With Ben showing very un Menz like traits in looking at passing before slotting a great goal from the side line and then snapping another moments later, the boys finished with a comfortable 12 goal win to remain undefeated. Next week will be a good test when they come up against the second Aspley side that has dropped down from Div 2 to Div 3 and whose first side sits undefeated on top of Div 1.
