the young Pumas came up against Narangba, the club that won the premiership last year in the comp most of the boys played in.
Whilst not the same Narangba side, the boys were looking forward to pitting themselves against a side that finished above them last year. With a couple of boys out due to the school holidays and temperatures in the low 30's, it was going to be an opportunity for the boys to see how they were going.
After losing the toss and kicking into the breeze, some good early work in the middle through acting skipper Daniel, saw the midfield with some early domination. With Benny O looking to present himself up forward, the boys were getting some early opportunities. On Narangba's couple of forward efforts, Patrick stood tall in defence and with some good vision got the ball out to the other side of the ground and put Jayden into the clear. Good movement from Jayden saw a goal and a handy lead heading into the first change.
With the breeze in the second quarter the boys had more opportunities. After a six goal haul in his last game, young Lochie was showing that he could play the team game and unselfishly passed to a player in a better position for an easy goal. Part way through the second quarter the game was stopped momentarily when the umpire went down with a back spasm. A five goal lead by the half had coach Derek happy with the lead but still reminding the team that they were wasting some opportunities through inaccurate kicking. A gentle remnider that better sides will make them pay saw the boys going back out into the heat.
With a coach of some of the boys in their younger years Taylor, volunteering to give the umpire a hand (and struggling to keep up in the heat), the boys had a lot of opportunities at goal in the third quarter but again their conversion rate was not great. The boys were battling hard for the ball but needed to improve their conversion. The fourth quarter again saw Lochie with some unselfish play to his brother and the boys managed to convert a few of the opportunities into goals and finished with a comfortable win.
A good effort by the boys, but when they come up against better opposition it will be interesting to see if they can keep the commitment levels up.
