The Tradelink Western Magpies although highly competitive against the power of Morningside for two quarters on Saturday suffered a similar fate to Round 9 in Toowoomba when they were blown away by the Panthers in the first and last quarters. Morningside were explosive in the first quarter dominating all over the ground to kick 7.4 to 0.2.
The Magpies faithful who turned out once again to see their boys could have been forgiven for fearing the worst at quarter time but Jarrod Thorpe and his players had other ideas. The Magpies came out after quarter time and hit the Panthers hard all over the ground and applied pressure winning the contested ball and moving the ball quickly into the forward line catching the Panthers defense off guard. The highlight a James Pennycuick left foot torpedo bomb from fullback creating a marking contest in the centre of the ground where Matt Green swooped onto the loose ball and launched his own torpedo from outside 50 which sailed through for a goal.
When the half time siren went the Magpies had won the second quarter 4.3 to 3.3 much to the bewilderment of the Esplen Oval Locals.
The third quarter was just as competitive with the Magpies standing up to the reigning Premiers at every contest over the ground but suffered on the scoreboard after missing some genuine opportunities in front of goal. The margin at three quarter time was 50 points which presented the Magpies with an opportunity to go out and keep the game to a respectable margin.
It was not to be as the effort of the young Magpies through the second and third quarters took its toll and the Panthers went on a final quarter rampage kicking 9.2 to 1.3 to blow the margin out to 97 points at the final siren.
Zaine Pringle at full back was the Magpies best although Shaun Mugavin finished with 5 goals Pringle wore him like a glove all day and spoiled him on the lead and recovered best to run off him and create time after time. Scott Clarke in his first Senior game since Round 1 was very good across half forward taking some outstanding contested marks.
Val Pope and James Rozynski worked very hard in the midfield all day while Jack Parkes battled well all day. James Pennycuick showed value and his kicking out from fullback was a feature while Matt Green kicked two goals in a lively performance. Jackson Allen showed his class once again although he is still rusty after such a long lay off.

The Western Magpies Tradelink Reserves were able to turn around their recent spate of sluggish starts with an outstanding first quarter but a poor second half resulted in the Panthers finishing stronger to run out 12.11.83 to 7.15.75 winners.
The result was a disappointing one for the Magpies but with a finals berth assured the knowledge that the Magpies will have a very strong squad of 30 plus players to pick from during the finals was some consolation.
The Magpies were on fire in the first quarter with Reid Dobson, Ben Jaenke-Cain and Kale Reed electric in the midfield and Brandon Morris and Matt Dillon working well in the forward line. The forward pressure by the Magpies was outstanding and the Panthers were pinned in their back half by a zone that was impenetrable. The Magpies took a 20 point lead into quarter time and appeared to have the Panthers on toast.
The second quarter was a much more even affair with the Magpies having 5 shots to 4 on goal but the Panthers made the most of their opportunities kicking 4 goals while the Magpies lost their direction to goal and only managed 1.4.
The third quarter saw both teams waste opportunities in an arm wrestle for control of the game with the Magpies registering 1.3 to the Panthers 1.4 giving the Magpies a slim ¾ time lead of 5 points.
With the game up for grabs in the last quarter it was the Panthers that were able to grab momentum winning the ball out of the middle and using the ball much more effectively going inside 50. They finished all over the top of the Magpies kicking 5.4 to 0.3 in the last to secure a 26 point win.
Kurt Sengstock provided a marking option across half forward and finished with two goals while Andreas Jurgens worked tirelessly all day in defense and in the ruck.
The match had some novelty value with injury and sickness combined with the club not playing any U/18’s due to a Qualifying Final the next day saw 40 year old Club Development Manager Anthony McDonald pull the boots on in an unexpected QAFL Reserves Debut.
That’s right Ladies and Gentlemen the “Silver Fox” was Karmichael Hunt like as he injected himself into the contest applying pressure to help create a turnover inside forward 50 to Reid Dobson. The old dog sniffed his opportunity and positioned himself beautifully for a handball receive off Matt Dillon and then ran into an open goal and finished with precision to the delight of all in attendance.
1 Handball, 1 Kick, 1 arguably effective tackle and 1 free kick against – Priceless!!!!
Thanks boys it was an honor and a privilege!
