THE Maroochy Northshore Roos are no more.
Seven years after Maroochydore and Northshore amalgamated for mutual gain in the senior ranks, the former has severed the partnership and gone it alone.
The decision to de-amalgamate was reached when Maroochydore held a special general meeting on March 29.
The new entity will be known as the Maroochydore Australian Football Club, or the Roos.
That was the name of the club when it folded at the end of the 1999 season, before its rebirth as Maroochy Northshore for the start of the 2005 season.
Northshore will be known as the Northshore Jets Australian Football Club.
The move has no effect on the junior component of either club, as the juniors have operated separately from the senior club.
Maroochydore president Craig Scrase said yesterday that the Roos had no choice but to de-amalgamate after Northshore decided to register a division-four team in the local competition this season.
However, Scrase stressed there was no acrimony between the clubs, adding: "They (Northshore) generated the momentum towards the name change and we just felt that it was a much smarter move to just segregate the two sporting clubs and allow them to align themselves better with their local communities."
Scrase said Northshore's influence in the partnership was on the wane and despite the separation, the Roos had not lost any players.
"It's not a political issue in any way and everyone's quite proud to go forward," he said.
Scrase said the amalgamation occurred because Maroochydore wanted to enter a side in the Pineapple Hotel Cup and Northshore was "encountering some challenges".
Northshore president Warren Selvage said de-amalgamation made sense after a Northshore team was entered in the under-18 competition last year when Maroochy Northshore was also fielding an under-18 side.
Selvage said the Jets needed to have their own senior identity to cater for the club's younger brigade once they graduated from the juniors.
"Under the circumstances, we're quite happy that that's happened, because it did cause a bit of confusion the way it was," he said.
