THE upcoming arrival of back-to-back reigning premier Hawthorn and fellow AFL club Melbourne could be the beginning of the Coast linking with a Victoria-based AFL club, according to Maroochydore Roos football manager Brendan Mason.
The Maroochydore Football Club committee member has helped organise upcoming pre-season trips by Hawthorn and Melbourne, and believes the training camps are just the tip of the iceberg for what the Fishermans Road-based club is trying to achieve.
"We'd love to build further relations, commercial relations with a top-line AFL team, and that will come in time," he said. "It's certainly early days to say that we've done that, but that will come."
Back-to-back premier Hawthorn will return for a week from December 12, after spending a week at the facility in the 2012 pre-season.
The Demons will spend two weeks in Maroochydore in January.
"It's a good thing for the profile of the sport," Mason said.
"It's a good thing for the supporters - not just for the supporters of those clubs, but the supporters of the game in general."
Keep an eye out on the Roos website and Facebook page for updates on open training sessions.
