When Nathan McKenzie arrived at Noosa with Crossy in 1999 his first training session was shared with only 5 other players, but as the season rolled on he must have thought it was easy in that the boys played in a drawn Grand Final (they lost the replay) and better times ahead appeared a formality.
Some 10 years later and Nackers is still chasing that ellusive flag - a Reserves Grand Final loss in 2006 being the only other chance - and is determined to lift up a cup before he retires.
Nackers started his footy at Frankston Rovers on the outskirts of Melbourne, the same club that gave Dermott Brereton his start in footy, yet it was playing in Warnambool at Mortlake from 1996-98 that destined him to playing for over a decade in a Tigers jumper. Both Crossy and Nackers had finished Uni (Nackers an Aquatic Science Degree) and after a bit of post Uni travel just randomly ended up in Noosa. 71 Seniors games and countless Ressies games later he is still loving his footy and in great form leading the way in the two's respectable win/loss record this year.
Off the field Nackers is a mainstay in the Cross/McKenzie household and it is true that over 23 blokes have swung in and out of the revolving door of a house that probably has more stories to tell than most.
Rather than donnning a wetsuit and tank, Nackers is now within 6 months of finishing a plumbing apprenticeship and when he does get a break still loves to grab a board or fishing rod.
Nathan McKenzie goes about the field quietly racking up stats and supporting his team mates and after 10 years at the club still loves getting a kick as much today as those early days in 1999 when it was all new an exciting. We hope you get your flag Nackers - you deserve it.
