The PJ Burns Noosa Tigers took on the undefeated Mayne AFC in a top of the table clash at Weyba Rd last Saturday.
Noosa made two changes with Tom Keehan and Troy Duke both out with injuries. Premiership player Tim Storrer made his way back into the senior team as did Seb Rogers who was unavailable last week.
The rain had cleared and made way for perfect football conditions as both undefeated sides took to the field. Noosa dominated the game early as Jai Fitzpatrick and Jesse Malthouse ran riot on the wings before Jai opened up the account for Noosa with a great mark and goal, then followed by another goal minutes later. Mid way through the team Noosa were in everything, Dylan Dempsey continued his great form and Seb Rogers saw plenty of the footy. Mayne then stemmed the tide with a long goal then wrestled back the momentum and dominated the rest of the quarter to kick 5 unanswered goals before Isaac Hughson swooped of a loose ball and kicked Noosa's 3rd. At the break Mayne led by 13 points.
Noosa 3-0-18 Mayne 5-1-31
The main message at quarter time was to keep control and stay disciplined. The message worked as Noosa keep Mayne scoreless for the quarter and kicked 3-3 themselves to take an 8 point lead into the half time break. Shane Davis was superb in the 2nd quarter as Noosa controlled the midfield . Jack Hendrie seemed to be a loose man in defence as he stopped Mayne across half back before racking up the kicks, linking up through the midfield. Riley Buntain was doing a great job on the dangerous Luke Falkner.
At Half time Noosa 6-3-39 to Mayne 5-1-31
The 3rd quarter was a fantastic battle and both teams continued the attack on the ball. Hughson was causing trouble as he kicked his 3rd for the day, Tim Storrer was giving the Noosa Tigers a big target up forward and Harry Opie was in control in the back line. Both teams went goal for goal as the both kicked 4 goals each in a great display of football. At 3/4 time Noosa lead by 6 points.
Noosa 10-4-64 Mayne 9-4-58
The stage was set for an epic last quarter from both teams who had beaten every side they had come across this year. After a tight struggle in the first ten minutes Mayne levelled the score and you could feel the tension around the ground. Both teams were desperate at the footy, Mayne got the next goal and from there the flood gates opened. Noosa were outplayed in the final twenty minutes as Mayne kicked 6 goals to Noosa's 1 point to run out 32 point winners.
Mayne 15-7-97 to Noosa 10-5-65.
The final score was not a true indication of the game as it was a tight, hard fought match. Mayne were too good in the end but the Noosa boys will have plenty to work on and will certainly improve from here on.
Noosa's best were Shane Davis, Jack Hendrie, Dylan Dempsy, Seb Rogers, Jed Mullen, Isaac Hughson.
Noosa goals Isaac Hughson 3, Jai Fitzpatrick 2, Tim Storrer 1, Alex Corrigan 1, Josh Reichman 1, Brett Duke 1, Nathan Winter 1
The Reserves went down to a strong Mayne outfit by 22 points. Morgan Webb played well for the Tigers. It was good to see the return of Premiership player Gary Wallace, won't be long till he makes his way back into the senior ranks. Also Dan Pertot and Scott Stiefler back to the club and playing some good football. This gives the club plenty of depth and plenty of selection headaches in the weeks to come.
The Colts lost to a classy Mayne outfit by 173 point. Jarrod Fischer was solid all day and named Noosa's best player.
Next week the Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers have another away game, this time we take on Aspely at Graham Rd Aspley. Noosa sit second on ladder with Aspley one game out of the 5, this will be a great contest.
