Become a Scorer

If you are like most softball scorers, your introduction to scoring was unexpectedly having a scorebook put in your hands and being asked to score. No need to panic as we have all the resources and tools you will need.

The key is to start slow and build up your knowledge and skills. To begin to score softball you will need a scorebook and a pencil. Your progression through scoring can be as slow or as quick as you desire. Whether you choose to score at a basic or advanced level is all your choice and dependant on how much you enjoy the scoring experience. The order of importance for scoring softball is runs, outs, and the count. The rest is useful recording for the coach.

Prior to deciding to become an official scorer of softball, the following information provides excellent insights in the role of a scorer. The most suitable resource is available in the Beginning Softball Scoring booklet. It is helpful to have an understanding of the basic Softball rules and terminology.

Whether you are a scorer who has started scoring for your child's games at club level or whether you aspire to score at international games, we have an extensive National Scoring accreditation program and extensive resources to assist you.

There are an estimated 1,270 plus accredited softball scorers throughout Australia and most scorerscome to the field with a keen interest in attention to detail coupled with dedication and a commitment to the game. The motivations and benefits of becoming a scorer are wide and varied – yet all scorers agree that they reap greater rewards from their volunteer role than they had anticipated when they first started scoring.

Like all technical roles, to make it to the elite scorer level significant experience is required. Progression from grassroots level through to accreditation at elite level takes at least five years.  Either way an interest in softball and some spare time is a great way to start.

During the last 20 years, Softball Australia's National Scoring sub-Committee (NSC) has spearheaded the technical development of scoring in softball. The NSC reports to the Technical Committee and the Board of Softball Australia and is run by six volunteer committee members all of whom share a reputable career in scoring softball at national and elite levels. Their commitment to the role comes from a passion for the game and a deep understanding of the needs of scorers from grassroots to community level.

At a beginner level, the NCS provide all of the information required to become a scorer ranging from registration.

The NSC is also critical in overseeing the sporting governance policies and guidelines applicable to scoring softball in Australia and is responsible for providing education, training and accreditation pathways for the scoring membership. The NSC's role ranges from training lecturers to provide expert training in scoring to matching mentors with scorers seeking further guidance. and providing a central hub for all scoring news. On occasion, we will also offer unique appointments and positions vacant in scoring.

As the NSC integrates its scoring content to the Softball Australia website, it aims to make information more accessible. Pleasecontact us and the NSC if you have any further enquires.

Alternately, you can contact your State Association Scoring Director, National Scoring Committee members or Softball Australia for more information.
