The Belconnen Magpies Football Club wishes to announce that their senior coach, Steve Mahar, has stepped down for the 2009 season, citing personal reasons and an inability to fully commit the time to the coaching tasks that he felt the position deserved .
Steve is a Life Member of the Belconnen Magpies Football Club with a long and decorated playing history:
- 5 time Club Best & Fairest,
- 3 time runner up,
- Triple Premiership player,
- 8 time AFL Canberra Rep player
Steve has been coach for the past three seasons, leading the club to runners up in 2006, a third place finish in 2007 and a minor premiership and an agonising runners up in 2008.
It was announced at presentation night that Steve had signed on for the coming season, and the decision by Steve to resign so shortly after the initial announcement certainly took the Club by surprise. However general manager Garry Davidson said he was grateful that Steve timed his decision so as the club has the best chance to get a new coach on board before pre-season training begins;
"it really shows the character of Steve as a bloke that he’s made this decision to step down from the top job in the club he loves and has played all his junior footy at, rather than doing the job at 80 or 90% for the next season. I’m pleased that he’s staying on as a player as well – the experience and leadership he still brings to the younger players is invaluable.”
The club has commenced a search for a new senior coach and will undertake a thorough selection process to ensure the right candidate is chosen to continue the strong Belconnen Magpies Football Club traditions.
