Senior Captain, Lexie Bennett will play his 100th First Grade Game for Belconnen Magpies this week against Ainslie on Saturday.
Lexie has been playing football since the age of 5 with the Belconnen Cats Junior Football Club. During his years at Belconnen Cats, Lexie played over 200 junior games and is on target to play just as many in his Senior Career.
Lexie has achieved great success whilst being a member of the Belconnen Magpies.
- 2001 - Best & Fairest U/18 Team
- 2003 - Reserve Grade Premiership
- 2004 - Most Courageous Award, 1st Grade Team
- 2005 - Grand Final Player
- 2006 - Grand Final Player
- 2007 - Most Courageous Award, 1st Grade Team
- 2008 - Captain of 1st Grade Team
Lexie will celebrate his milestone on Saturday 2nd of August when Daryl Read will induct Lexie into the 100 Game Club at the 100 Game Dinner.
Lexie has enjoyed his years at Belconnen and believes it is “a great honour to be with a group of players who have made similar achievements at the club, but at the end of the day we're concerned about group success. Belconnen is the kind of place where people come for a short time and not knowing what to expect but stay for longer than they planned. All the players at the club are great mates and would do anything for each other both on and off the field.”
General Manager Garry Davidson speaks highly of one Belconnens’ fiercest competitors. "Often Lexie is pitted against bigger stronger forwards each week but this doesn’t deter him from accepting the challenge that goes with such tasks. He’s hard at the footy and is uncompromising in his desire to win for the club”.
“He is proving to be good leader on and off the field and is a pivotal player in our push to the Finals”.
Senior Coach, Steve Mahar describes Lexie as "a fantastic person to have at the Belconnen Magpies. He is our Club Captain and has had a long association with the club in playing his entire football career here, as well as supporting his dad Curly when he played."
Mahar believes "Lexie is extremely courageous, competitive and tough, which are all the characteristics of a great Captain. He plays right to the final minute of every game and demands that of all of his peers. Lex loves the challenge of playing on the opposition’s best forward and in most cases comes out on top. He has a great spoil and mark and has improved his kicking to be one of the best at the club. Lex’s best trait is probably his courage when he floats off his man and takes a mark in front of a leading opposition forward."
Mahar also praises his off field leadership, "Not only does Lex lead by example on the field, he enjoys the traditions and adding to the culture of the Magpies who have gone before him. He is also the first to put his hand up when people from the club need a hand."
Congratulations Lex on playing your 100th First Grade game. Lets hope you can get another 200 like your dad!
