Round 7 Match Reports
Division 2
Mac Uni 4.5.29 lost to Southern Power 8.13.61
The Warriors took on fellow ladder leader Southern Power on a surprisingly good University Oval after heavy rain during the week. It would seem the great work done by the University a few months ago with respect to drainage and grass has paid off.
We had a strong side take the field and as expected the first quarter was a high intensity & low scoring contest with the boys earning a hard fought 4 point lead at quarter time. Jerome Farrell started well at fullback on a very dangerous opponent and Troy McMurrich began what would be a long day in the ruck with Luke Gemmell not playing this week after a trip to Melbourne.
The good Southern Power side then took the game out of our hands over the next two quarters kicking 7 goals to 2. Their fitness and speed were a highlight and something the Warriors will certainly work on over the coming months. During the 2nd and 3rd quarters the backline worked extremely hard and honourable mentions to Donnie Ollington, Phil Hare, Cameron Inchley & Tim Scoular who ensured the difference at 3/4 time was only 5 goals.
All players were asked to make a stand in the last quarter and to our credit the scoreline was 2 behinds to each side which was extremely pleasing considering we only had 1 fit player on the bench. The backline repelled 10 Southern Power inside 50's with only 2 shots on the board which was back to their season average. Despite the last quarter effort the Southern Power prevailed by 32 points and the Warriors now seek revenge in Round 17 in which we hope to turn the tables to 1 win each in the home and away rounds.
Best on Ground: J. Farrell, T. Scoular, J. Whyte, D. Ollington, C. Inchley, A. Lamond
Division 3
Mac Uni 15.12.102 beat Southern Power 4.8.32
The Warriors returned to University Oval looking to get back on the winners list. DK stressed the importance of not taking the Sharks lightly and although yet to register a win this season they had delivered some commendable performances against some of the strongest teams in the comp. With the recent poor weather restricting training during the week the Warriors were looking to justify the mid week sacrifice to stay off the oval and ensuring our home game was played at home.
Kicking to the left of screen, if you were watching on TV, and with the aid of a 2 to 3 goal breeze, the Uni boys came out showing the enthusiasm of a team that didn’t get to spend as much time on the track as they would like. Claw was not only giving us first use of the ball from the tap but his desperation when the ball was on the deck was relentless and contributed to a nice goal to Rusty. In what were relatively dry conditions, the forwards capitalised on the inside 50’s kicking 6.2 for the quarter.
The second term brought with it more of the same. The Mac Uni defenders rebounded many a Shark attack sending the ball back into the wind and in to the Warriors attacking 50. Abs was relishing his time on the ball and the physical conditions that the day presented. Jimmy Moylan cashed in on the amount of ball coming in to the forward line and finished with three goals for the day. Selecting the right options when going forward resulted in another accurate kicking display of 5.1 for the quarter against 2.1 for the Sharks.
With a handy 8-goal lead at half time the Uni Warriors were looking to extend on this in the second half. Pup and Summer used the ball well out of the centre and continued driving the ball forward. Excellent use of the ball in the lead up found Dunc free, and with good communication was able to stroll in and kick his second for the day. Ricey was also getting his “sticky” hands on the ball to finish with a heap of marks and two goals for afternoon and with Claw kicking his 3rd for the day helping us to 3.4 to the Sharks 1.2 for the quarter.
Looking to finish the game strongly and gain a bit of percentage, inaccuracy in front of goal kept us from doing so. The Warriors managed 1.5 for the quarter while the Sharks kicked 4 straight points.
Best on Ground: Patrick “Claw” Sobb, David “Abs” Allison, Mark “Ricey” Rice, Chris “Pup” Hayes, “Jimmy” Moylan, Carl “Summer” Edwards

U18 Challenge Cup
Mac Uni 0.4.4 lost to Southern Power 8.20.68
After a very ordinary performance last week we were up against the Southern Power at home on Saturday to test ourselves against a top side.
Played in what was the worst conditions of the day we were down by 29 points at quarter time but with a lot of positives. Our attack on the ball and enthusiasm was much better than the week before and a couple of positional changes got some guys into the game.
After kicking 4 goals in 1st quarter the Power only managed to score 4 more for the rest of the game which is a credit to our determined desperation.
Adam Martin, Kyle Morkel and Cameron Jefferies all had good games down back with Cameron Poole and Peter Frost working hard through the middle.
Mark Bishop continued his consistent form and Jordan Bell played his best game to date this year. Whilst there were many pleasing signs with players having some of their best footy for the season we must continue each week to improve each week.
Best on Ground: J. Bell, M. Bishop, A. Martin, P. Frost, C. Poole, C. Jefferies
