Macquarie University Australian Football Club got their season back on track with a gritty win over Western Suburbs in Division One of the Sydney AFL competition. Wests jumped out of the blocks early, but a four-goal second term from the Warriors got them right back in the game. The sides went goal-for-goal in the second half and at the final siren the Warriors had their noses in front to record an 8-10-58 to 8-7-55 victory. With both Brett Harland and Brodie Cooper sidelined with injuries, youngster Dylan Brogan was given the captaincy and lead from the front all day with a best on ground performance. In just his 3rd season since graduating from the Under 18's competition, Brogan has quickly emerged as one of the club's premier talents. Coach Lindsay Bassani described the result as, "A much needed win to give the boys some confidence going into the business end of the season". Bassani also praised stand-in captain Brogan saying, "For a young kid in his first game as captain, I thought he showed tremendous maturity today".
Macquarie's Division Three side continued their recent form, defeating East Coast Eagles by 14 points to make it three wins on the trot. Down early again, the side took confidence from their hard fought wins over the last two weeks to chip away at the Eagles, before gaining the lead just before 3/4 time. The Warriors then held East Coast goalless in the last term to record an 8.11.59 to 6.9.45 victory. Coach Luke Gemmill commended his team for their continued perseverance over the past three weeks, "To our boys credit, over the past few weeks they have displayed a self-belief that has allowed us to fight out the match until the very end - and they should be proud of that".
The growing injury list in Division One took its toll on the lower grades this week, with many players having to play multiple games in order to fill spots. The resulting 74-point defeat to Moorebank in Division Four came as no surprise but was still a disappointment for a side that was previously undefeated. Rowan Pryor kicked three goals for the Warriors but it was not enough to stop a dominant Moorebank who won the game 16.16.112 to 6.3.38.
Moorebank also took the honors in Division Five, with an 11-point win in a close encounter. Coach Tim Wolnizer threw on the boots to help out his depleted side and kicked three goals, but in the end Moorebank held on for an 8.8.56 to 7.3.45 victory.
The Macquarie University Women's team also recorded a win this week, as they downed the Bondi Shamrocks by 28 points. Emma McClelland and Amanda Farrugia each kicked three goals as the Warriors put in a dominant performance to win 7.11.53 to 3.7.25.
This week, Macquarie University will travel to Bruce Purser Reserve in Rouse Hill to take on East Coast Eagles in Division One, the Ressies have a BYE in division three, whilst Div 4 and the U18 Kookas will host Parra at home. Div 5 is away to Sydney Uni this round and the U18 Warriors will travel to Monach Oval to take on Campbelltown. The Warrior Women will host Wollongong at Mahoney Park.
