Macquarie University Australian Football Club recorded a strong set of results on the Mothers’ Day weekend, posting wins in three out of four grades in the Sydney AFL competition.
The Warriors’ Division One side took on Illawarra at home in Round Six and were eager to make amends for last week’s embarrassing 1 point loss to Sydney University. In a one sided affair, Macquarie kicked 15 second half goals to one to record a 127-point thrashing of Illawarra. Stephen Brooks was unstoppable up forward booting eight goals, while Leighton Corr also chipped in with a five-goal haul as the Warriors won 27.15.177 to 3.3.21.
Coach Lindsay Bassani praised the side’s efforts after the game. “We learnt our lessons the hard way last week but were fantastic in turning that around today” he said. Bassani also added, “We are trying to create a family here. When Warriors win, we win together”.
The Warriors were also honored to provide the Sydney Swans with two players this weekend. Warrior brothers Eric and Andrew Moody both received the call up into the Swans Reserves on the weekend with Eric kicking 2 goals as the Swans beat GWS at Manuka Oval in Canberra.
In Division Three, the Macquarie Reserves side celebrated their first victory of the season in style with a 103-point annihilation of Western Suburbs. Traveling to Picken Oval on Sunday, the Warriors paid tribute to the unsung heroes of any football club – the players’ mums – by putting in a dominant performance to run out 16.21.117 to 2.2.14 victors on Mothers’ Day. Coach Luke Gemmill described the win as “A full four quarter effort”. Gemmill added, “When you have trouble picking the top six players– it’s a sign that everybody had a standout game”.
Macquarie accounted for Penrith 13.11.89 to 10.7.67 at home in Division Four, with former club captains Paul Jackson and Carter Mullins leading the way. Coach Matthew Scoular was disappointed with how his side used the ball in the first half but said “The way we used the ball in the second half was more direct and allowed us to take control of the game”. Rowan Pryor was the dominant forward on the day kicking three goals.
Unfortunately the Warriors’ Division Five side couldn’t make it a clean sweep, unable to peg back a four-goal, half time deficit to go down by 15 points to Camden. Coach Tim Wolnizer was disappointed with his team’s efforts on the day. “You can’t win games of football when you only turn up to play one half”, he said.
Fresh off their maiden victory in Round 1, the Warrior Women took on a spirited Southern Power at home. Unfortunately they were met by a very strong outfit on the day and were soundly beaten 7.11.53 to 1.0.6. Amanda Farruigia was the lone goal kicker for Macquarie while Val Chan and Melissa Howard were amongst the best on ground. Manager Liz Fassone said of the defeat, “It was great that the Macquarie women fought it out to the end. Their ability and confidence continues to grow”.
