Div 1 VS Balmain Tigers @ Henson Park
The Warriors travelled to Henson Park to take on the undefeated Balmain Tigers in what we knew would be a tough contest. The Tigers sitting top of league presented a great challenge for the Warriors to benchmark themselves against the best. The first quarter was almost faultless with a 4 goals to 1 term and the message was to repeat it during the second. With the wind in the second the Tigers managed to get a roll on and proved themselves with 6 unanswered goals. Going into the main break down by 10 points it presented a challenge for the Warriors in the 3rd. The Warriors took it to Tigers during the secondary half but were unable to bridge the gap. Ending with a 15 point defeat. The positives out of the game were the relentless attack on the football but kicking inaccuracy proved costless with more scores that the Tigers it has given the team something to work on for the rematch in June.
Womens VS Wollongong Saints @ North Dalton Park
On Saturday afternoon the Warrior Women headed south to North Dalton Park for their first meeting with the Wollongong Saints since 2012.
The first quarter saw some good passages of play from both sides in windy conditions, however accuracy let the Warriors down, kicking 6 behinds in response to 2.1 for the home side.
The second quarter saw a much better effort from the Warriors across the park. The defence, led by Salome Cerda-Vargas, improved as the match progressed with some impressive individual plays from rookies Kiona Vance and Charlotte Wayte. In another best-on-ground performance, Amanda Farrugia booted 2 impressive goals as the Warriors (2.6) went into half time trailing the Saints (3.1) by 1 point.
With the sun down and the lights on, the third term was a low scoring, physical affair. The battle of the midfield was again a highlight for the Warriors, as Kristy Sutcliffe and Steffanie Lee came up with some impressive plays in both attack and defence. Scores were locked at 20-20 as the team approached the final term.
The fourth quarter began well for the Warriors, as Aislinn Albury, who was impressive in the ruck all game, threaded a goal from out wide with pin-point accuracy. The home side was far from finished though and equalised not long after. Another goal to Wollongong inside the final 10 minutes proved enough to give the Saints the win by 6 points.
MUAFC would like to congratulate Taylor Ling on her debut for the club, and would like to thank Matty Lawrence, Belinda Small and Ian Wright for their assistance on the day.
