Macquarie Warriors 13.10.88 defeated Sydney Uni 6.6.42
The last round of the season saw the Warriors at home to Sydney Uni, in a match that had a heap riding on it. After striving hard all year to play finals football, the Warriors had one match left to achieve their goal.
The first quarter started perfectly, as a pin point pass by Rooster to Butch was duly converted by the big fella to give us a lightning start. The game developed into a bit of a scrap from here though. Windy conditions meant that the ball spent a lot of time over on the ‘dead side’ of the ground and this seemed to suit Sydney Uni who were intent on reducing the game to a dour slog. Despite this, the Warriors managed to find the big sticks at regular intervals and went into the quarter time break with a handy 3 goal lead.
The second and third quarters saw the game plummet into an unattractive spectacle, as the boys from Sydney Uni lifted their intensity at the ball and made a real contest of it. To their credit, Sydney Uni was able to make more of their chances and had closed the gap to 16 points at three quarter time. There were a few concerns in the Warriors camp at this stage, although the performances of Andrew Robertson, Charles Bickersteth and James Shipway provided us with some comfort.
With it all to play for in the last quarter, the boys seemed to be sparked into action. Rove showed great attack on the footy on half forward and turned to spot up Nipper inside 50 who kicked an important goal to push the lead out to 22 points. From here the Warriors cantered home to record a solid, if somewhat flattering 46 point victory.
A few nervous hours were then spent waiting on the results from other games to determine if we had snuck into the top four and fortunately we had held fourth place, locking in an elimination final against Moorebank at Henson Park next Sunday. Congratulations to all the boys for their efforts so far this season and lets carry it on into next week and beyond!
Best Players: Andrew Robertson, Charles Bickersteth, Mat Tharme, Stephen Mann, James Shipway, Anthony Clarke
