Round 1: Warriors VS Newtown Breakaways
The opening round of the Sydney Womens AFL season saw the Warrior Women take on the Newtown Breakaways at University Oval.
A slow start in defence, and some impressive passages of play by the Breakaways led to a costly first half, where the visitors notched up 41 unanswered points, although there were some positive plays for the home side leading into the break.
Minutes into the second half, Vice-Captain Liz Fassone opened the goal scoring for the Warriors, which was shortly followed by a superb right foot snap from Kristy Sutcliffe to give the Warrior Women plenty of momentum going into the final term. Fassone again scored for the home side in the 4th quarter, where the visitors were held goal-less by the defensive line, but had plenty of points already on the board to take the win.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the match was the battle of the midfield, led by Sutcliffe, Fassone and captain Amanda Farrugia. Nakita Brown worked tirelessly at ruck for the entire match, whilst Gabby Ferreira was also impressive in her first senior match for the Warriors. With plenty of quality touches, Farrugia was named best on ground for the home side.
Congratulations to the 7 MUAFC Debutants: Charlotte Wayte, Kiona Vance, Emily Young, Vivien Talbot, Rebecca Villis, Gabby Ferreria and Kira Duroux.
