Div 1 Match Report VS Illawarra Lions
The trip down to the gong to play the Lions provided the unique opportunity for a bus trip for the seniors, the ride alone generating plenty of hype. Arriving in the gong we were treated to a cold and windy afternoon for what was going to be a tough slog all game. With the wind advantage in the first quarter the warriors were able to kick 2 goals whilst keeping the Lions to 2 behinds. Moving into the second quarter the task was to limit the Lions forward entry with a 2 goal wind advantage. The Warriors were up to the task and managed one of their own taking a 3 point advantage into the main break. The 3rd quarter presented the chance to make a play to control the game with the wind advantage. The Lions lifted and we missed a couple of opportunities to press home the advantage in a goalless quarter for both teams it meant the Warriors would be called on again to rise the occasion. Playing into the wind the message was to keep the ball out of the middle and lock down every contest. The Warriors were able to execute and managed to keep the Lions scoreless whilst snagging a sealing goal with 4min to play.

Div 3 Match Report VS Sydney University
When game day arrived someone had clearly forgotten to hit the temperature switch. We were greeted with rain, hail, wind and cold, the only thing missing was the polar bears. Fortunately it was an afternoon game and by then someone had managed to find the switch to everything bar the temperature. By the time the boys arrived at Sydney Uni (SU) there were more hoodies to be seen than at a Harlem riot.
These cold conditions did not phase the boys whose fiery start was hotter than a madras curry. The Warriors kicked the opening two goals which clearly stunned the top 4 SU.
The ferocity of the Warriors from the bounce was notable and SU was feeling the heat.
The game was stopped in the early minutes as people scrambled for a stretcher for one of the SU players. Fortunately he was able to walk off and just as well as I think the stretcher must have been coming from Hurstville hospital.
SU finally clicked in to gear and took a small lead at the first break, albeit their kicking had let them down but this was also due to the sustained pressure our boys were applying at every contest. Stue was providing great defence which he continued throughout the game.
The second quarter was similar to the first with SU having the upper hand on the scoreboard but the Warriors winning most of the physical battles.
By half time Phar Lap had run the equivalent of 10 Melbourne cups, the only thing not at the same pace as the mighty champion. Dre was looking menacing up forward with Cam taking some fine marks across half forward. Mud was doing all the hard things that we expect from him and Bennie was everywhere, presenting himself at every opportunity.
SU broke the game wide open in the third and showed why they are a top 4 side with their impressive running game. The margin was now some 10 goals but this would not demoralise the mighty Warriors who regrouped and committed to take it up to SU in the final quarter. They certainly did that with there being very little change in the final margin.
The final quarter showed the real fighting spirit and never say die attitude of the Warriors. Stavros was a tackling machine in the last, Hugh was solid and reliable across the half back line, Pup was workmanlike all game earning him a spot in the best, was was Westie and Cookie.
The result aside, the Warriors showed the grit and determination that will certainly get them in to the winners circle this year and push for the top 4.
Highlights
- Stix running at pace (for 6 steps, or was it 5)
- Rooster looked like he had worked over the whole chicken pen - never stopped all day
- Dopey spending as much time on the field as the players (and he was the runner). Forgot to come back to the coaches box
- Tackling
- Hard at the contest
- Grit and determination
- Winning the contested ball at ground level
Best Players
Bennie ,Cookie , Pup, Hugh, Dre, Westie
Final Score
Warriors 5.6 (36) defeated by Sydney University 15.13 (103)

Womens Match Report VS Balmain Dockers
The Warriors won their second game in a row on Saturday after defeating Sydney Women’s AFL heavyweights Balmain Dockers at University Oval.
Mac Uni burst out of the blocks with a four goals-to-one first quarter and then maintained that lead throughout the match. The midfield brigade led by Nakita Brown & Liz Fassone dominated the centre clearances, while Amanda Farrugia and Laila Waisu won plenty of footy around the ground. After being under a bit of pressure early in the second quarter, the defense stood firm with outstanding performances from Kirsty Sutcliffe, Steff Lee, Belinda Muldoon and Barbara Lynch.
Although kicking with a slight breeze in the third quarter the Warriors were unable to increase their lead. However, the forward line led by Aislinn Albury and Jessie Wong were able to keep the ball locked in the forward fifty and deny Balmain a chance to get back into the game. A very tight contested last term saw Jess Willemse and Sarah Botros rise to the occasion with some very tough tackling. The Warriors eventually grinding out a 17 point win to move to equal second on the Division One ladder.
Highlights
- Play of the Day: Belinda Muldoon has been rock solid at fullback so far this season, and her desperation on the last line of defense was fantastic again on Saturday. One of her marks (against two Balmain players) was an excellent example of her skill and courage.
- At short notice Lisa “Kiwi” Roper was asked to play across half back and did an outstanding job. She was tough at the ball and her ability to kick well with both feet saw the Warriors get out of trouble a few times.
- The toughness of our captain Sarah Botros was outstanding yet again! After copping a couple of high hits and nursing a back injury, Boomer played right through the game and did a fantastic job on the wing, despite giving away a huge height advantage to her opponent.
Best Players
Liz Fassone, Amanda Farrugia, Kristy Sutcliffe, Jess Willemse, Aislinn Albury, Steff Lee.
Goals
Jessie Wong 2, Amanda Farrugia 2, Aislinn Albury 2.
