Division 1 7.5-47 def by
Penrith 10.8-68
With 14 players from the senior squad not available due to injury, suspension and general unavailability, and with 3 debutants and others returning to the side, we knew that the task against Penrith was going to be a tough one. Whilst we never really played at our optimum level, the guys never stopped trying all day, going down by 3 goals in the end.
Our Co-Captain Jimmy Brackin was brilliant for us in the ruck, along with Jimmy Moylan who provided a lot of rebound and drive off half back. Special mention also must go to first gamer Kieran Bridger who played on the ball and showed that he has a lot of quality that can only be to the betterment of the side for the remainder of the season.
This week we have the bye, although the seconds are playing on Thursday night in a catch up game so there will be some senior players featuring in the match.
Women 13.18-96 def
UTS Shamrocks 0.0-0
The Warrior Women capped off Macquarie Uni’s Pink Sock Round with another fantastic defensive display against UTS, winning 13.18 (96) to 0. 0.(0). It was the second time within the past four weeks that the team has held the Shamrocks scoreless.
The Warriors began the first term slowly, missing a few targets across the ground early. But it was defender Leah Woldhuis, given an opportunity to start at Full Forward, who made the most of her chances with three first quarter goals. She would finish with five for the day – her biggest individual haul.
The second quarter mirrored much of the first, with the contested footy hard to win and the half-back line under great pressure. However it was the great efforts of Liz Fassone and Laila Waisu who muscled the Warriors back into the contest with some disciplined work through the middle. Sarah Botros also provided some great drive off the wing and Samantha Martin provided another option up forward with some great contested marking.
After a few half time changes, the Warriors came out firing in the 3rd quarter, and while there were some missed opportunities on goal, the general play was much more encouraging. Ashley Gray (2 goals) was very effective in the forward line and Belinda Muldoon rebounded well out of the backline. Loretta Moore once again showed what a weapon her pace can be, and Nakita Brown was tremendous in the ruck.
The final quarter was the Warrior’s best for the game – finishing strongly and finally converting their chances. Aislinn Albury, despite spending much of her time up the ground, finished the game with four goals. There were also some great majors from Stacey O’Loughlin and Steff Lee. Rookie Anne Sedgley continued to show her improvement with some solid marking and Jess Willemse once again showed her ability to switch into the midfield with effective results.
The win has left the Women’s team with a 7-0 win/loss record heading into the mid-season break, but with tough away games against Penrith and Southern Power to come.
A massive thank you must go to both the men’s and women’s teams for their efforts on Saturday regarding jobs. Unfortunately, with two of the games starting late, communication & focus became essential and everyone handled themselves admirably. T-Bone also did a fantastic job as umpire, despite coming straight from his coaching stint the game before.
We hope the women enjoy their long weekend break, and come back refreshed and ready to rip into the second half of the 2013 season.
Under 18's 18.12-120 def
Penrith 4.4-28
The Under 18s Warriors returned to their winning ways with a resounding demolition of Penrith on the weekend. From the outset it was obvious that the 8 goal loss to Parramatta two weeks ago had hurt and all players were switched on. It was great to see the entire team's intensity and discipline mesh together with the increased focus on structures. With the boys all working for each other off the ball, good talk and some great defence and rebound the 18s managed to keep Penrith very quiet on the scoreboard. A fantastic performance from the 18s who have struggled this year with games so far apart due to byes, with the revised draw to be released after the long weekend here's hoping for a good run of wins!
Division 3 13.12-90 def by
Penrith 19.17-131
Mac Uni came up against Penrith on a windy day at Northern Oval, and the conditions made scoring tough early on. Penrith made the early running before a couple of late goals evened things up at the first change. With a slight wind advantage in the second quarter, the Warriors gained some ascendancy out of the middle and this allowed for plenty of quick ball into the forward line, where Tim Cameron was grabbing everything and Jackson Brackin was showing plenty of nous at ground level. The Warriors opened up a 20 point lead, however a couple of late goals to the Rams gave them the momentum heading into the long break. Unfortunately the momentum continued into the second half as the rams piled on an avalanche of goals to open up a margin that the boys wouldn’t recover from. Pharlap worked tirelessly in the ruck all day, while Carter persisted all day after getting plenty of attention. The backline led by Donnie and Claw battled manfully all day, while special mention goes to Tim Cameron and Jackson Brackin who kicked 10 between them in a losing side.
Division 4 3.2-20 def by
UTS 24.15-159
This week saw our division 4 side came away with loss to a quality UTS side. Coming off a washout round and a few of our favorites returning, there was plenty of itch to get the U9s hockey off the track and get stuck in. Unfortunately, UTS hit the ground running and we were slow to get points on the board. We struggled to convert what possession we did have into points. Defensively we were good, but UTS’s persistent penetration into our backline is always going to leak points. As per recent weeks we have shown form for only short periods and this week were able to extend this to the second half as our ball usage improved and we started taking strong forward marks.
Come the final siren and plenty of guys were sucking in the big ones, but at the end of the day we were beat by a better team. Despite no wins for 2013 yet, spirits are still high as we build week to week.
Best; Micky D, Addo, Jack, Sam C, Punchy, Diesel.
